The metal-organic framework ZIF-8, which undergoes hydrolysis under hydrothermal conditions, is endowed with high water-resistance after a shell-ligand-exchange-reaction. The stabilized ZIF-8 retains its structural characteristics with improved application performances in adsorption and membrane separation.
A new method for the large-scale hydrothermal production and activation of ZIF-8 is presented in this communication. Activated ZIF-8 has been produced, at lab-scale and pilot-scale, at a rate of 27 g h(-1) and 810 g h(-1) respectively with the activated material showing a surface area of 1800 m(2) g(-1).
Headed for a membrane: Continuous, polycrystalline ZIF-90 membranes (picture, left) can be grown at 65 °C from methanolic precursor solutions on nanocrystal-seeded surfaces of poly(amide-imide) macroporous hollow fibers (right). The ZIF-90 membranes exhibit good separation properties for linear over cyclic hydrocarbons, as well as gas permeation selectivities higher than Knudsen values.
Highly-oriented ZIF-8 thin films with controllable thickness were grown on an -OH-functionalized Au substrate using the liquid phase epitaxy method at room temperature, as evidenced by SEM and PXRD. The adsorption-desorption properties of the resulting ZIF-8 thin film were investigated for various VOCs using the QCM technique.
