We observed 69 A3-F8 main sequence binary star systems using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. We find emission significantly in excess of predicted photospheric flux levels for 9 −3% and 40 −6% of these systems at 24 and 70 μm, respectively. Twenty two systems total have excess emission, including four systems that show excess emission at both wa...

In forced two-dimensional turbulence on a rotating sphere, it is well known that a multiple zonal-band structure, i.e. a structure with alternating eastward and westward jets, emerges in the course of time development. The multiple zonal-band structure then experiences intermittent mergers and disappearances of zonal jets, and a structure with only a few large-scale zonal jets is realised as an...

Voyager 1 and 2 narrow-angle frames were used to obtain displacements of features at resolutions of 130 km over time intervals of 1 Jovian rotation. The zonal velocity d was constant to 1.5% during the 4 months between the Voyager 1 and 2 encounters. The latitudes of the zonal jet maxima (extrema of •) are the same as inferred from earth-based observations extending over the past 80 years. The ...

Plasma zonal-flow excitation and saturation in fluid electron-drift-wave turbulence are studied spectrally. The zonal flow is a spectral condensation onto the zero-frequency linear-wave structure. In the representation diagonalizing the wave coupling that dominates interactions at long wavelengths, nonlinear triad interactions involving zero-frequency waves are greatly enhanced. Zonal modes are...

The use of manual (i.e., active) restraint systems (or seat belts) in cars has increased dramatically over the last several decades, changing from around 10% in the late 1970s to as much as 68% in the 1990s (Datta & Guzek, 1992; National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA], 1996b). Several factors are responsible for this increase. One important determinant has been the passage of man...

[1] We report on the atmospheric structure derived from atmospheric entry of NASA’s Phoenix Mars probe using Phoenix Atmospheric Structure Experiment (ASE) data complemented by Mars Cl imate Sounder (MCS) temperature‐pressure profiles. Oscillations in temperature, caused by thermal tides, have vertical wavelengths of tens of kilometres. Their amplitudes are much larger in individual profiles th...

Critical gradient transport dynamics, breaking of gyro-Bohm transport scaling, transport bifurcation, and transport barrier formation all have a profound effect on confinement in magnetic fusion devices, and are thought to be both generated and regulated by the nonlinear interaction between gradient-driven small scaled ( k!"s <1) drift turbulence and larger meso-scaled structures such as zonal ...

Na(+),K(+) ATPase is an essential ion pump involved in regulating ionic concentrations within epithelial cells. The zebrafish heart and mind (had) mutation, which disrupts the alpha1B1 subunit of Na(+),K(+) ATPase, causes heart tube elongation defects and other developmental abnormalities that are reminiscent of several epithelial cell polarity mutants, including nagie oko (nok). We demonstrate...
