Recent understanding of the mechanism of immunoglobulin G (IgG) catabolism has yielded new insight into antibody-mediated diseases. We proposed that beta2-microglobulin (beta2m)-deficient mice have been protected from systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE)-like syndromes because they lack the beta2m-associated IgG protection receptor (FcRn) and therefore catabolize IgG, including pathogenic IgG aut...

Several protein misfolding diseases are associated with the conversion of native proteins into ordered protein aggregates known as amyloid. Studies of amyloid assemblies have indicated that non-native proteins are responsible for initiating aggregation in vitro and in vivo. Despite the importance of these species for understanding amyloid disease, the structural and dynamic features of amyloido...

BACKGROUND Meeting specific guideline targets is associated with improved survival rates and reduced hospitalizations in the dialysis population. This prospective work evaluated the adequacy of hemodialysis quality indicators in an in-center hemodialysis population with severe comorbidities, and assessed whether clinical practice could impact intermediate outcomes. METHODS All the chronic hem...

Left-right asymmetry is a fundamental feature of higher-order brain structure; however, the molecular basis of brain asymmetry remains unclear. We recently identified structural and functional asymmetries in mouse hippocampal circuitry that result from the asymmetrical distribution of two distinct populations of pyramidal cell synapses that differ in the density of the NMDA receptor subunit Glu...

The prognosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients displaying trisomy 12 (+12) remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed the influence of the proportion of cells with +12, and other clinical and biologic factors, in time to first therapy (TTFT) and overall survival (OS), in 289 patients diagnosed with CLL carrying +12. Median OS was 129 months. One hundred seventy-four patients (60....

Whole-lung lavage (WLL) remains the standard therapy for pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP), a process in which accumulated surfactants are washed out of the lung with 0.5-2.0 l of saline aliquots for 10-30 wash cycles. The method has been established empirically. In contrast, the kinetics of protein transfer into the lavage fluid has not been fully evaluated either theoretically or practical...

Aims Proximal renal tubular dysfunction (PRTD) is an infrequent complication after nucleotide analogue therapy. We evaluated the outcomes of PRTD and nephrotoxicity after nucleotide analogue withdrawal in chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Methods A longitudinal follow-up study was performed in patients with PRTD after nucleotide analogue discontinuation. Serum and urine were collected at baseline an...

Over expression of proteins in E. coli frequently results in the production of inclusion bodies. Although β(2) -microglobulin frequently forms fibrillar structures, our studies reveal significant differences between the protein in fibrils and inclusion bodies. This suggests that the formation of fibrils in inclusion bodies is dependent on the propensity of the protein to form fibrillar structures.
