Renaturable regions in the DNA strands of the N group plasmid pCU1 have been visualized as stem-loop structures by electron microscopy. Four such distinct structures are described, the smallest of which is within the loop of a larger one. The region of pCU1 in which these structures occur has several restriction sites. This and the availability of plasmid deletions and recombinants has permitte...

D I F F E R E N T crosses involving the same marked region in Neurospora crassa may yield markedly different frequencies of recombinants. It has been suggested that the fluctuations in recombination frequency result from inherent differences between the various wild-type strains from which the stocks descended (BARRATT 1954; FROST 1961). However, the nature of these differences and the ways in ...

The RV144 HIV-1 vaccine trial (Thailand, 2003 to 2009), using immunogens genetically matched to the regional epidemic, demonstrated the first evidence of efficacy for an HIV-1 vaccine. Here we studied the molecular evolution of the HIV-1 epidemic from the time of immunogen selection to the execution of the efficacy trial. We studied HIV-1 genetic diversity among 390 volunteers who were deferred...

The production and selection of infectious vaccinia virus recombinants expressing foreign genes was facilitated by the construction of plasmid vectors. These vectors contain all or part of the vaccinia virus thymidine kinase (TK) gene interrupted by multiple unique restriction endonuclease sites placed adjacent to the TK promoter or another promoter translocated within the TK gene. The insertio...

Errors associated with the repair of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) include point mutations caused by misincorporation during repair DNA synthesis or novel junctions made by nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ). We previously demonstrated that DNA synthesis is approximately 100-fold more error prone when associated with DSB repair. Here we describe a genetic screen for mutants that affect the fide...

Mouse submaxillary epithelium undergoes branching morphogenesis with increase in the curvature of its surface in vivo. Recombination experiments in vitro of the epithelium and mesenchyme between 13- and 14-day rudiments showed (1) that the 14-day mesenchyme more actively induced the epithelium to branch than the 13-day mesenchyme, (2) that the 14-day mesenchyme could produce clefts on smaller e...

A DNA mapping panel derived from an interspecific backcross was used to position the mouse insulin-2 locus (Ins-2) on Chromosome 7, near H19 (0/114 recombinants) and Th (1/114 recombinants). Ins-2 is part of a human-mouse conserved linkage group that includes Th, H19, and Igf-2. Analysis of segregation in the F2 generation from the cross C57BL/6J-tub/tub x CAST/Ei demonstrated that Ins-2 and th...

Abstract Background Widespread access to antiretrovirals has resulted in improved survival among PLHIV resource-limited settings. In a previous study, ART failure the Philippines after one year was found be 10.3%. However, this done as cross-sectional study and did not capture dropouts or pre-existing drug resistance (PDR). Treatment failure, taking into account PDR, dropouts, long-term viral s...

Five isolates of Rice yellow mottle virus from western Kenya were fully sequenced. One isolate of strain S4lv had been collected in 1966. Two isolates belonged to the emerging strain S4ug recently described in Uganda. Two isolates collected in 2012 are putative recombinants between the S4lv and S4ug strains.
