We have numerically studied a liquid composed of achiral, bent-shaped molecules built tangent spheres. The system is known to spontaneously break mirror symmetry, as it forms macroscopically chiral, twist-bend nematic phase [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 147801 (2015)]. Here, we examined the full diagram such and observed several phases characterized by orientational and/or translational ordering molec...

Type IIA topoisomerases modify DNA topology by passing one segment of duplex DNA (transfer or T-segment) through a transient double-strand break in a second segment of DNA (gate or G-segment) in an ATP-dependent reaction. Type IIA topoisomerases decatenate, unknot and relax supercoiled DNA to levels below equilibrium, resulting in global topology simplification. The mechanism underlying this no...

Two experiments investigated whether infants would look longer at a rotating "drawbridge" that appeared to violate physical laws because they knew that it was causally impossible, as claimed by R. Baillargeon, E. S. Spelke, and S. Wasserman (1985) and R. Baillargeon (1987a). Using a habituation paradigm, they reported that infants looked longer at a display that appeared impossible (rotated 180...

In this paper we discuss the stability of a uniform Fréedericksz configuration in highly anisotropic thin nematic films. We show that the Fréedericksz transition in a bend geometry is at least two-dimensional, and it occurs at field strengths lower than the known classical threshold.

Abstract The Vrancea seismic zone, located in the bend region of South-Eastern Carpathians, is a unique area with both crustal and intermediate-depth activity known as one most active Europe. Moderate seismicity recorded all over Carpathian region, but far more intense occurs small subcrustal seismogenic volume beneath SE‐bend arc about 20 × 50 km lateral 110 vertical extent (70–180 depth). A s...
