Background: Phenol and its derivatives like dinitrophenol and pentachlorophenol (carbolic acid) are widely used as insecticides, but they are very toxic substances. Phenol is a general protoplasmic poison with corrosive local effects that denature proteins. Poisoning with phenol compounds may occur by ingestion, inhalation, and absorption through skin. In this report we presented the toxicity...

An important source and preparation method are reported from the Munich laboratories of WillsGtter (l-3) and his associates who have prepared a highly purified peroxidase from horseradish. The methods of Willstatter, with certain modifications, were employed in the present investigation. About 14 pounds of horseradish roots were cleaned, sliced thin, and self-dialyzed in running water for 8 day...

There is a widespread interest in the commercial application of D-glucose-isomerase for the large-scale conversion of D-glucose into fructose-containing syrups[ ]. As such, there is a need for a rapid and reliable method for the routine analysis of glucose-isomerising activity in fermentation broths. The analytical methods currently in use include the incubation of the enzyme preparation with a...

Adenovirus-induced hyperleptinemia rapidly depletes body fat in normal rats without increasing free fatty acids and ketogenesis, implying that fat-storing adipocytes are oxidizing the fat. To analyze the ultrastructural changes of adipocytes accompanying this functional transformation, we examined the fat tissue by electron microscopy. After 14 days of hyperleptinemia, adipocytes had become shr...

Brown rice (BR) or unmilled rice is the whole grain of rice, from which the germ and outer layers containing the bran have not been removed. Brown rice seeds are rich in more nutritional components, such as dietary fibers, vitamins B and E, gamma (γ)-oryzanol and γ-amino butyric acid (GABA) than the ordinary milled rice grains. GABA or 4-aminobutyrate is a well known non-protein-based amino aci...

The meroditerpenoids atomaric acid (1), epitaondiol (2) and the peroxylactone of 5'a-desmethyl-5'-acetylatomaric acid (3) were isolated from the Brazilian brown alga Stypopodium zonale collected in two localities (Búzios and Marataízes, RJ and ES States). These compounds showed strong anti-HSV-1 activity in vitro but neither of them inhibited the transcriptase reverse enzyme of HIV-1.
