Until the recent introduction of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications, only available hepatitis C treatments were lengthy and onerous interferon-based therapies, with relatively weak success rates. While experiences treatment have been well documented, there is a need to better understand how ‘old’ shape contemporary experiences. This article uses concept ‘post-crisis’ developed in critica...

Viral resistance to direct-acting antiviral drugs may impact their effectiveness during treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Most data on HCV drug resistance concern genotypes 1 and 3. The clinical impact of resistance to HCV nonstructural protein 5A (NS5A) inhibitors and a practical approach to indications and methods for resistance testing are discussed.
Background: Direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) are used increasingly to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Reports were published recently on hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation (HBV-R) in patients with HBV–HCV co-infection. Hepatitis B virus reactivation, defined as an abrupt increase in HBV replication in patients with inactive or resolved HBV infection, may result in clinically sig...
Treatment of hepatitis C virus with potent, interferon-free, direct-acting antiviral regimens with no activity against hepatitis B virus (HBV) may increase the risk for HBV reactivation in coinfected patients. We present 2 cases of HBV reactivation during treatment with an all-oral regimen of simeprevir and sofosbuvir and discuss strategies to prevent HBV flare.
BACKGROUND Interventions such as opiate substitution therapy (OST) and high-coverage needle and syringe programs (HCNSP) cannot substantially reduce hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence among people who inject drugs (PWID). HCV antiviral treatment may prevent onward transmission. We project the impact of combining OST, HCNSP, and antiviral treatment on HCV prevalence/incidence among PWID. METHO...
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with several human cancers. Latent membrane protein 1 (LMP-1) is one of the key viral proteins required for transformation of primary B cells in vitro and establishment of EBV latency. In this report, we show that LMP-1 is able to induce the expression of several interferon (IFN)-stimulated genes (ISGs) with antiviral properties such as 2'-5' oli...
BACKGROUND Low serum 25-Vitamin D levels are associated with advanced fibrosis in hepatitis C infection. Vitamin D supplementation has been hypothesized to augment response rates to interferon-based therapy. To date, no investigation has evaluated vitamin D levels during direct-acting antiviral therapy. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic c...
