PURPOSE Human vision has a puzzling stereoscopic anisotropy: horizontal depth corrugations are easier to detect than vertical depth corrugations. To date, little is known about the function or the underlying mechanism responsible for this anisotropy. Here, we aim to find out whether this anisotropy is independent of age. To answer this, we compare detection thresholds for horizontal and vertica...

A method for evaluating the temperaturedependent magnetic anisotropy field from thermomagnetic curves for Stoner–Wohlfarth-like systems is proposed. It allows the anisotropy parameters of a sample with unknown spontaneous magnetization to be obtained by using magnetic fields considerably lower than the anisotropy field.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cerebral ischemia leads to a rapid decrease of the apparent diffusion coefficient. For fractional anisotropy both increase and decrease have been reported in acute ischemic stroke. Aim of this study was to characterize early water diffusion changes in a homogenous group of acute stroke patients and to clarify the issue of early fractional anisotropy changes and their rela...

The isotropic magnetic moment of a free atom is shown to develop giant magnetic anisotropy energy due to symmetry reduction at an atomically ordered surface. Single cobalt atoms deposited onto platinum (111) are found to have a magnetic anisotropy energy of 9 millielectron volts per atom arising from the combination of unquenched orbital moments (1.1 Bohr magnetons) and strong spin-orbit coupli...

A hollow cylinder apparatus was used to investigate the inherent anisotropy and membrane penetration of Leighton Buzzard sand test-specimens. The degree of inherent anisotropy was found to be independent of the mean effective stress but dependent on the initial relative density of the test-specimen. In the vertical-tohorizontal directions, the degree of inherent anisotropy decreases with increa...

Dislocation model of strain anisotropy is presented. The dislocation theorem of strain broadening is suggested which means that strain broadening can only be caused by dislocation-type lattice defects. Based on this theorem strain anisotropy is modeled and accounted for by assuming that strain broadening is caused by dislocations or dislocation-type lattice defects. The effect of strain anisotr...

Recently, we have used polarimetry as a method for assessing the linear retardance of infarcted myocardium. While linear retardance reflects tissue anisotropy, experimental geometry has a confounding effect due to dependence of the linear retardance on the orientation of the sample with respect to the probing beam. Here, polarimetry imaging of an 8mm diameter birefringent polystyrene sphere of ...

In this paper, a semi-analytic thermal stress computation for single crystals with cubic anisotropy is developed, by introducing a new anisotropic factor. Based on a suitable splitting of the differential operators, a convergence series for general elasticity problem with cubic anisotropy is derived. Each term of the series is related to an isotropic elasticity problem. Using the analytic solut...

The decays of intensity and polarization anisotropy of the photoluminescence (PL) of polymer-like amorphous carbon ®lms have been measured at 300 and 80 K using 4.13 and 2.15 eV excitation. For emission energies, Eem, between 1.8 and 3.5 eV, PL polarization anisotropy decreases within 100 ps and reaches a plateau within 1 ns. The anisotropy plateau increases from 0.02 to 0.12 and the intensity ...

The fractional anisotropy (FA) value for Diffusion Tensor Imaging is widely used to determine the anisotropy of diffusion in a given voxel. As the FA value is based on the tensor’s eigenvectors it is not possible to calculate this quantity for HARDI diffusion profiles. In this paper we introduce an anisotropy index for HARDI data that utilizes the L-norm as the most natural notion of distance f...
