Knowledge of the kinetic behavior of catalysts under synthetically relevant conditions is vital for the efficient use of compounds that mediate important transformations regardless of their composition or driving force. In particular, these data are of great importance to add perspective to the growing number of applications of photoactive transition metal complexes. Here we present kinetic, sy...

The transition from batch to continuous processes for polyol production presents interesting challenges because of the unusual behavior of double metal cyanide (DMC) catalysts. One feature that is often observed in these catalysts is the need for an activation period whose length changes from one catalyst formulation to another. When this activation occurs in the same reactor where the chain gr...

The presence of aryl sulfides in biologically active compounds has resulted in the development of new methods to form carbon-sulfur bonds. The synthesis of aryl sulfides via metal catalysis has significantly increased in recent years. Historically, thiolates and sulfides have been thought to plague catalyst activity in the presence of transition metals. Indeed, strong coordination of thiolates ...

We propose a method to enhance the fuel cell efficiency with the simultaneous removal of toxic heavy metal ions. Carbon monoxide (CO), an intermediate of methanol oxidation that is primarily responsible for Pt catalyst deactivation, can be used as an in-situ reducing agent for hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) with reactivating the CO-poisoned Pt catalyst. Using electro-oxidation measurements, the ...

Understanding Fe deposition in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysis is critical for the mitigation of catalyst degradation. Here we employ soft X-ray ptychography to determine at the nanoscale the distribution and chemical state of Fe in an aged FCC catalyst particle. We show that both particle swelling due to colloidal Fe deposition and Fe penetration into the matrix as a result of precrac...

Semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY) was studied in a 5 m tube reactor wall-coated with a 5 wt % Pd/ZnO catalyst. The system allowed for the excellent selectivity towards the intermediate alkene of 97.8 ± 0.2% at an ambient H2 pressure and a MBY conversion below 90%. The maximum alkene yield reached 94.6% under solvent-free conditions and 96.0% in a 30 vol % MBY aqueous solution. Th...

Operando UV/Vis spectroscopy with on-line mass spectrometry was used to study the effect of different types of impurities on the hydrocarbon pool species and the activity of H-SAPO-34 as a methanol-to-olefins (MTO) catalyst. Successive reaction cycles with different purity feedstocks were studied, with an intermittent regeneration step. The combined study of two distinct impurity types (i.e., f...

A series of Ru(II) (η(6)-arene) complexes with 1,2,3-triazolylidene ligands comprising different aryl and alkyl wingtip groups have been prepared and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, microanalysis, and in one case by X-ray diffraction. All complexes are active catalyst precursors for the oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes/ketones without the need of an oxidant or base as add...

The development of robust desulfurizers and new reforming catalysts is a critical path for the use of jet fuels in powering the commercial growth of fuel cell systems for air and military applications. The presence of high concentrations of sulfur-containing organic compounds leads to rapid deactivation of traditional reforming catalysts, and removal of the sulfur components from the fuel throu...
