Clostridium perfringens, a prevalent Gram-positive bacterium, causes necrotic diseases associated with abundant life loss and economic burdens of billions USD. The mechanism C. perfringens-induced remains largely unknown, in part, because the lack effective animal models presence large array exotoxins diverse disease manifestations from skin deep tissues to gastrointestinal tract. In light adva...

Results A total of 47 critically ill patients (32 men, mean age 66 ± 9 years, mean SOFA-score on admission 9 ± 3) with Clostridium non-difficile infection were included in this study. The most common pathogens were Clostridium innocum (n = 23), Clostridium perfringens (n = 11), Clostridium tertium (n = 6) and others (n = 7). Pathogens were detected in 62% intra-abdominal, in 29% in blood cultur...

All 10 rRNA operons have been situated on the genome map of the anaerobic pathogen Clostridium perfringens. Four of these have been cloned and partially sequenced, and their transcriptional patterns in vivo and in vitro have been examined. Expression of rrnA, rrnB, and rrnE is directed by tandem promoters, P1 and P2, whereas rrnH is the only one to be expressed from a single promoter, which res...

In vitro, Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin (CPE) binds to human ileal epithelium and induces morphological damage concurrently with reduced short-circuit current, transepithelial resistance, and net water absorption. CPE also binds to the human colon in vitro but causes only slight morphological and transport changes that are not statistically significant.

Enterotoxin was produced by 9 of 10 strains of Clostridium perfringens type A when grown in a defined medium. Additional dextrin increased the amount of enterotoxin in extracts of sporulating cells of strain NCTC 10239.

Three techniques for using the dog as an assay organism for Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin are described. These are believed to be more convenient than ligated ileal-loop procedures.

It has been suggested that the microbicidal effect of metronidazole is mediated by an intermediate in nitro group reduction. We have found that the addition of Escherichia coli enhances the lethal effect of metronidazole on Bacillus fragilis and suggest that this intermediate may form in one bacteria and kill another. Because acetamide forms during the reduction of metronidazole, we examined th...
