We propose an explanation of the phenomena of Bose Novae, the controlled collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate described in the experiment of Donley et al [1], as a consequence of the squeezing and amplification of the quantum fluctuations above the condensate by the condensate dynamics. In analyzing the changing amplitude and particle contents of these excitations, our simple physical picture...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Tobacco smoking is a significant risk factor for periodontal disease. It has been suggested that smoking may alter connective tissue remodeling in the periodontium. In the present study, we investigated whether cigarette smoke condensate modulates the production of the serine protease urokinase in human gingival fibroblasts. MATERIAL AND METHODS Primary cultures of hu...

Starting from an approximate microscopic model of a trapped Bose-condensed gas at finite temperatures, we derive an equation of motion for the condensate wavefunction and a quantum kinetic equation for the distribution function for the excited atoms. The kinetic equation is a generalization of our earlier work in that collisions between the condensate and non-condensate (C 12) are now included,...

Magnetically and optically confined Bose-Einstein condensates were studied near a microfabricated surface. Condensate fragmentation observed in microfabricated magnetic traps was not observed in optical dipole traps at the same location. The measured condensate lifetime was >or=20 s and independent of the atom-surface separation under both magnetic and optical confinement. Radio-frequency spin-...

We report the observation of coexisting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and Fermi gas in a magnetic trap. With a very small fraction of thermal atoms, the 7Li condensate is quasipure and in thermal contact with a 6Li Fermi gas. The lowest common temperature is 0.28 microK approximately 0.2(1)T(C) = 0.2(1)T(F) where T(C) is the BEC critical temperature and T(F) the Fermi temperature. The 7Li cond...

We revisit the exciton mechanism of superconductivity in the framework of microcavity physics, replacing virtual excitons as a binding agent of Cooper pairs by excitations of an exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate. We consider a model microcavity where a quantum well with a two-dimensional electron gas is sandwiched between two undoped quantum wells, where a polariton condensate is forme...

We report on the production of a F = 1 spinor condensate of Rb atoms in a single beam optical dipole trap formed by a focused CO2 laser. The condensate is produced 13 mm below the tip of a scanning electron microscope employing standard all-optical techniques. The condensate fraction contains up to 100,000 atoms and we achieve a duty cycle of less than 10 s.

In the framework of the operator product expansion I provide a detailed evaluation of the contribution of the lowest photon condensate to the two-point photon Green function for four-dimensional spinor electrodynamics and three-dimensional scalar electrodynamics. Since the above mentioned condensate affects the part of the propagator contributing to physical amplitudes I suggest that this conde...

An exact diagonalization study reveals that a matter-wave bright soliton and the Goldstone mode are simultaneously created in a quasi-one-dimensional attractive Bose-Einstein condensate by superpositions of quasidegenerate low-lying many-body states. Upon formation of the soliton the maximum eigenvalue of the single-particle density matrix increases dramatically, indicating that a fragmented co...
