From March 2005 to June 2006, Réunion Island, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, faced an explosive chikungunya outbreak (a mosquito-borne disease caused by an alphavirus of the Togaviridae family). It was estimated that about 300,000 people were affected by the disease [1]. Many patients experienced related chikungunya disease symptoms (fever, polyarthralgia, skin rashes, diarrho...

OBJECTIVES To observe the prevalence of malaria, dengue, and chikungunya and their association with mosquito breeding sites. METHODS The study was observational and analytical. A total of 162 houses and 670 subjects were observed during the study period. One hundred forty-two febrile patients were eligible for the study. After obtaining informed consent from all febrile patients, 140 blood sa...

The fi rst confi rmed case of chikungunya fever on Rodrigues Island was reported in February, followed by 56 cases in March, 393 in April, and >80 in May (9). The increase in CDRs reported for the Republic of Mauritius during the chikungunya epidemic is similar to the fi ndings reported for the neighboring island of Réunion (10). Excess deaths in Réunion and the Republic of Mauritius coincided ...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES During 2006, chikungunya emerged as a major ever known epidemic in India. Disability adjusted life years (DALY) is an appropriate summary measure of population health to express epidemiological burden of diseases. We estimated the burden due to suspected chikungunya using DALYs for the first time and compared between the states and also with the burden due to other vecto...

Chikungunya virus is an alphavirus of the Togaviridae family, which causes a febrile illness with arthralgia in humans. We report here on the complete genome sequence of chikungunya virus strain CHIKV-13-112A isolated from a patient in the Philippines who was suspected to have dengue virus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the strain is of the Asian genotype.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) strain DH130003 was isolated from a traveler with Chikungunya fever returning from Bali to Germany. Although strains of the east-central/south African lineage bearing the A226V mutation have predominated in most parts of Asia since 2005, CHIKV DH130003 belongs to the Asian lineage.

Travelers returning from the tropics often present with rash/fever. Those with rash/fever and myalgias/arthralgias are most likely due to chikungunya fever, dengue fever, or Zika virus. In these arthropod viral transmitted infections, the rash may be pruritic. The case presented here is that of chikungunya fever remarkable for the intensity and duration of her pruritis.

Chikungunya virus is recognized as a serious public health problem. The complete genome was sequenced for a chikungunya virus isolated from the mosquito Aedes aegypti during a 2011 outbreak in Al Hodayda, Yemen, which resulted in significant human fatalities. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that this Yemeni isolate is most closely related to Indian Ocean strains of the east/central/south Afr...

Chikungunya is an arthropod born acute febrile arbo viral illness characterized by acute severe polyarthralgia. During last few years there has been scattered out breaks with associated neurological complications in India. Here we report a case of post chikungunya reversible demyelinating encephalitis who presented with vertigo, dysarthria and ataxia. There was complete clinical as well as radi...

We identified 78 imported chikungunya cases in Taiwan during 2006-2014. Sixty-six (84.6%) cases were initially suspected to be dengue, which indicates the necessity for laboratory diagnostics in differentiation between dengue and chikungunya. Results also emphasize the need for active surveillance of febrile illness at points of entry.
