Fetal hydrops (hydrops fetalis) remains a significant cause of fetal and neonatal mortality. The decreased incidence of rhesus iso-immunisation due to prophylaxis with rhesus immune globulin (anti-D), improved antenatal ultrasound screening, and advances in neonatal intensive care have greatly altered the clinical outlook in this condition. A retrospective review of all 27 liveborn cases of hyd...

BACKGROUND It is the purpose of this article to describe a suspected association of inadvertent vaccination with varicella vaccine during early pregnancy with the subsequent development of in utero miliary fetal tissue calcifications and fetal hydrops detected by sonogram at 15 weeks of gestation. CASE This is a case presentation of a pregnant patient who received varicella vaccination during...

Ballantyne syndrome is a syndrome with severe hydropic placenta and fetus followed by maternal hydrops. Several different causes may lead to this syndrome. In fact, Ballantyne syndrome may result from any factor causing severe hydrops fetalis. The diagnosis can be supported by sudden and rapid weight gain, severe edema, oliguria with albuminuria, blood pressure less than 140 mmHg and hemo...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between endolymphatic hydrops and perilymphatic potassium. METHODS 20 pigmented guinea pigs were used: 10 for scala vestibuli study and 10 for scala tympani study. Acute endolymphatic hydrops was produced by microinjection of an artificial endolymph into the scala media. Injections were performed in the second turn at rates up to 500 nl/min for a peri...

Objective. To examine venous blood flow velocity in different types of fetal hydrops and its value in the prediction of outcome of pregnancies. Methods. Venous Doppler sonography was performed in 100 hydropic fetuses from 15 to 37 weeks of gestation. Blood velocity was recorded in the right hepatic vein (HV), the ductus venosus (DV) and in the intra-abdominal part of the umbilical vein (UV). Bl...

With the decline in the frequency of rhesus isoimmunisation, hydrops fetalis secondary to other factors is becoming increasingly recognised. We describe a case in association with chorioangioma of the placenta. The causes of non immune hydrops are reviewed and the problems of management discussed.

A double-chambered right ventricle was diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound examination in a case of fetal hydrops and polyhydramnios. Delivery was induced at the 28th week. 2D echocardiography of the newborn confirmed the intrauterine diagnosis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of prenatally diagnosed divided right ventricle, causing hydrops.

Introduction : Horizontal corneal diameter is one of the diagnostic factors in some ophthalmic diseases. At present American Newborn horizontal corneal diameter is considered as our normal value in Iranian ones, while it may be quite different in Iranian newborns. Early diagnosis is critical in some ophthalmic diseases such as congenital glaucoma and awareness of normal corneal diameter is es...

From histopathological specimens, endolymphatic hydrops has been demonstrated in association with inner ear disorders. Recent studies have observed findings suggestive of hydrops using MRI in humans. Previous studies suggest that vasopressin may play a critical role in endolymph homeostasis and may be involved in the development of Ménière's disease. In this study we evaluate the effect of vaso...

HYPOTHESIS The aim of this study was to create a more dynamic animal model of Ménière's disease combining multiple causes, such as the role of endocrine factors and endolymphatic sac dysfunction, that may mimic the fluctuant characteristics of Ménière's disease. BACKGROUND Endolymphatic hydrops remains to be considered a pathologic substrate in the etiology of Ménière's disease. The classic g...
