A toxin that causes morphological changes in Chinese hamster ovary cells was isolated from a culture filtrate of Shigella dysenteriae 1. It was partially purified by successive column chromatography on diethylaminoethyl-cellulose, Bio-Gel A-5m, and hydroxylapatite. The toxin was separated from neurotoxin by diethylaminoethyl-cellulose column chromatography and was not lethal for mice.

New plant growth regulators, named chloroisosulochrin, chloroisosulochrin dehydrate and pestheic acid, have been isolated from the culture filtrate of Pestalotiopsis theae grown on a Raulin-Thom medium. Their structures have been established by spectroscopic and chemical methods. The biological activities of these compounds have been examined using bioassay methods with lettuce and rice seedlings.

Six isoflavonoids having beta-galactosidase inhibiting activity were isolated from the culture filtrate of Streptomyces xanthophaeus. Their structures were determined by spectral analyses to be daidzein, daidzein 7-alpha-L-rhamnoside, daidzein 4',7-di-alpha-L-rhamnoside, genistein, genistein 7-alpha-L-rhamnoside and genistein 4',7-di-alpha-L-rhamnoside.

Pradimicin S was isolated from the culture filtrate of Actinomadura spinosa AA0851. NMR and MS analyses proved that pradimicin S is the 3'-O-(3''-O-sulfo-beta-D-glucopyranosyl) analog of pradimicin A, a new member of the pradimicin family of antibiotics. Stereochemical assignment was made by correlating pradimicin S with pradimicin L.

In the course of screening search for plant growth regulators, a culture filtrate of Streptomyces graminofaciens 3C02 was found to inhibit the growth of lettuce seedlings. The active substances, named rotihibin A (1) and B (2), were revealed to be lipo-peptidal compounds. Rotihibins inhibit growth of various plants at below 1 microgram/ml, but do not show lethal activity even at higher doses.

Aranorosin, a new antifungal antibiotic, has been isolated from the culture filtrate and mycelium of a strain of Pseudoarachniotus roseus Kuehn. The antibiotic, C23H33NO6, contains a novel 1-oxaspiro[4,5]decane ring system. The structure (I) has been elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical analysis.

A new diterpene antitumor antibiotic, myrocin C, has been isolated from the culture filtrate of a soil fungus, Myrothecium verrucaria strain No. 55. The antibiotic was effective against Gram-positive bacteria, fungi and yeasts, and prolonged the life span of mice bearing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma.
