We report the electrical conductivity enhancement of a perylene-based MOF upon partial ligand oxidation. The is rationalised by quantum-chemical calculations, supporting through-space hopping transport.

Cooperative aggregation of monomers into one-dimensional nanostructures typically results in elongated objects. Here we analyse in depth the self-assembly of an N-monoarylated perylene bisimide which shows characteristics of a cooperative growth mechanism but unexpectedly yields objects of small size, due to anti-cooperativity by attenuated growth.

Chloroform-vapor annealing of thin films of propoxyethyl perylene tetracarboxylic diimide (PE-PTCDI, an n-type semiconductor) deposited on glass or mica leads to formation of well-defined one-dimensional self-assemblies (e.g. nanobelts), which show optically uniaxial properties as demonstrated by the linearly polarized emission.

Controlled aggregation of perylene bisimides in multiple modes has been achieved via symmetric substitution with peptides. Using optical probes of aggregation, the balance of hydrophobic and electrostatic forces are found to play a key role in directing self assembly and are exploited via solvent, pH, and specific extrinsic ion effects.

Laminated nanotapes were fabricated via conformation specific self-assembly of two N-annulated perylene derivatives (NPDs). The assemblies in solvated states were characterized using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), and their nanostructures were modulated by the synergistic interactions of π-π stacking and hydrogen bonds.
