New extrinsic lower bounds are given for the classical Dirac operator on the boundary of a compact domain of a spin manifold. The main tool is to solve some boundary problems for the Dirac operator of the domain under boundary conditions of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type. Spinorial techniques are used to give simple proofs of classical results for compact embedded hypersurfaces.

Numerical evaluation of the overlap Dirac operator is difficult since it contains the sign function e(Hw) of the Hermitian Wilson-Dirac operator Hw with a negative mass term. The problems are due to Hw having very small eigenvalues on the equilibrium background configurations generated in current day Monte Carlo simulations. Since these are a consequence of the lattice discretization and do not...

Dirac operators are important geometric operators on a manifold. The Dirac operator DA on the four dimensional Euclidean space M = R is the order one differential operator whose square DA ◦ DA is the Euclidean Laplacian − ∑4 i=1 ∂ψ ∂xi . However, this is not possible unless we allow coefficients for this linear operator to be matrix-valued. Let M = R be the four dimensional Euclidean space with...

For n ∈ {2, 3} we prove minimax characterisations of eigenvalues in the gap of the n dimensional Dirac operator with an potential, which may have a Coulomb singularity with a coupling constant up to the critical value 1/(4 − n). This result implies a socalled Hardy-Dirac inequality, which can be used to define a distinguished self-adjoint extension of the Coulomb-Dirac operator defined on C0 (R...

We first apply the method and results in the previous paper to give a new proof of a result (hold in C/Z) of Gilkey on the variation of ηinvariants associated to non self-adjoint Dirac type operators. We then give an explicit local expression of certain η-invariant appearing in recent papers of Braverman-Kappeler on what they call refined analytic torsion, and propose an alternate formulation o...

Let (M, g, σ) be a closed Riemannian spin manifold of dimension n ≥ 2. We define the two quantities λ±min(M, [g], σ) := infg∈[g] |λ ± 1 (g)|Vol(M, g) , where λ+1 (g) is the smallest positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator D and λ−1 (g) is its largest negative eigenvalue. If S is the sphere S with the standard metric, it is known that the two inequalities λ±min(M, [g], σ) ≤ λ + min(S ) hold. I...

Let G/K be a simply connected spin compact inner irreducible symmetric space, endowed with the metric induced by the Killing form of G sign-changed. We give a formula for the square of the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator in terms of a root system of G. As an example of application, we give the list of the first eigenvalues for the spin compact irreducible symmetric spaces endowed with a ...

We show that, with an appropriate choice of a Dirac operator, there is a remnant of chiral anomalies in the reduced model in which there is no coordinate dependences of the gauge field. This result is obtained by exploring a topological nature of chiral anomalies associated to Ginsparg-Wilson-type lattice Dirac operators.

Let (M, g) be a compact Riemannian spin manifold. The AtiyahSinger index theorem yields a lower bound for the dimension of the kernel of the Dirac operator. We prove that this bound can be attained by changing the Riemannian metric g on an arbitrarily small open set.

In the presence of a non-vanishing chemical potential the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator become complex. We calculate spectral correlation functions of complex eigenvalues using a random matrix model approach. Our results apply to non-Hermitian Dirac operators in three-dimensional QCD with broken flavor symmetry and in four-dimensional QCD in the bulk of the spectrum. The derivation follows ...
