A 3-month-old male red fox that was in contact with a Persian cat referred to the small animal hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Tehran with multi-focal circular non-pruritic skin lesions and hair loss mainly on the head and extremities. A complete series of dermatologic tests such as Wood’s light examination, direct microscopic examination, and fungal culture were perform...

The forkhead box O (Foxo) subfamily of transcription factors regulates expression of genes important for many cellular processes, ranging from initiation of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis to induction of DNA damage repair. Invertebrate Foxo orthologs such as DAF-16 also regulate longevity. Cellular responses inducing resistance to ROS are important for cellular survival and organism lifespan, ...

N ASSOCIATION between hepatocellular carcinoma and pol cythemia was reported in 1958 by McFadzean, Todd and Tsang’ who found the red cell mass to be increased in 17 of 28 patients investigated. The red cell masses were calculated from the plasma volumes determined by the T-1824 dye method. When radioactive isotopes became available it was decided further to investigate the red cell mass in hepa...

Three different reactive dyes Reactive Blue 19, Reactive Orange 16 and Reactive Red 180 were dissolved in water separately in concentration 0.04g/l as model pollutants for contaminated wastewaters from textile industry. Every wastewater sample was treated by ozone with concentration 2000 ppm for 30 minutes at ambient temperature and the effect of discoloration was traced after 5, 10, 20 and 30 ...

Removal of the white cells and platelets from suspensions of red cells usually produces substantial reduction in the hemolytic activity of venoms. Guinea pig red cells constitute a notable exception and may be lysed by a direct action of venom. White blood cells and platelets appear to contribute to hemolysis by serving as sources of phosphatides for the formation of lysophosphatides. No correl...

Effects of red (600 to 680 nanometers) and far red (700 to 760 nanometers) irradiances on Amaranthus retroflexus L. seeds indicate that synthesis of phytochrome in the red-absorbing form takes place in water-imbibed nongerminating seeds at 35 C. After 96 hours in darkness, conversion of about 0.10% phytochrome to the far red-absorbing form induces 50% germination. Continuous far red radiation a...

We present 8–13 μm spectra of eight red giants in the globular cluster 47Tucanae (NGC104), obtained at the European Southern Observatory 3.6m telescope. These are the first mid-infrared spectra of metal-poor, low-mass stars. The spectrum of at least one of these, namely the extremely red, large-amplitude variable V1, shows direct evidence of circumstellar grains made of amorphous silicate.

Dapsone hydroxylamine (DDS-NOH) is a direct-acting hemolytic agent responsible for dapsone-induced hemolytic anemia in the rat. The hemolytic activity of DDS-NOH is associated with the formation of disulfide-linked hemoglobin adducts on membrane skeletal proteins. We have postulated that this membrane protein "damage" is a consequence of DDS-NOH-induced oxidative stress within the red cell and ...

Pluripotent hemopoietic progenitors in human bone marrow can be identified by their ability to give rise in culture to colonies that contain more than one lineage of hemopoietic differentiation. Growth of these mixed colonies is supported by media conditioned by leukocytes in the presence of phytohemagglutinin (PHA-LCM) and erythropoietin. They can be readily recognized by direct microscopic ob...
