Emulsion polymerization is one of the most important and versatile polymerization processes. About 10 million tonnes of polymer latices are produced annually for a variety of applications, such as coatings and paints. A key step in most applications is film formation upon evaporation of the dispersing medium, rendering aqueous dispersions particularly environmentally benign. Polymer dispersions...

Water-in-oil emulsions are commonly used to provide persistent release of antigens necessary for sustained stimulation of the immune system. Optimal response of an animal's immune system is dependent upon repeated, maintained exposure to the antigen. The sustained release of antigen, which delays catab-olism, is thought to be one of the major methods by which adjuvants enhance the immune respon...

High solids content film-forming poly[styrene-co-(n-butyl acrylate)] [poly(Sty-co-BuA)] latexes armored with Laponite clay platelets have been synthesized by soap-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene and n-butyl acrylate. The polymerizations were performed in batch in the presence of Laponite and a methyl ether acrylate-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) macromonomer in order to promote poly...

In this study, the potential of PTMC and mPEG-PTMC microparticles for controlled delivery of hydrophilic drugs was investigated. PTMC and mPEG-PTMC microparticles, loaded with hydrophilic model compounds (BSA, lysozyme and CoomassieR Brilliant Blue G) were prepared by the double emulsion method. High loading efficiencies can be achieved, and first order release profiles during 60 days were obse...

Transparent heterogeneous ultrathin films of exfoliated layered double hydroxide (LDHs) nanosheets, fabricated alternately with polyanion, have been obtained via a layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly which yields a series of novel LDH films with potential multifunctionality.

We demonstrate a microfluidic method to first generate double emulsion droplets containing two different inner drops, and to then control the internal coalescence of the encapsulated drops. The advantages of the core-coalescence method are illustrated by fabricating high viscosity particles and by demonstrating the dissolution of cell membranes.

Here we report the application of monodisperse double emulsion droplets, produced in a single step within partially hydrophilic/partially hydrophobic microfluidic devices, as defined containers for quantitative flow cytometric analysis. Samples with varying fluorophore concentrations were generated, and a clear correlation between dye concentration and fluorescence signals was observed.

We present a simple microfluidics-based technique to fabricate Janus particles using double-emulsion droplets as templates. Since each half of the particles is templated from a different immiscible fluid, this method enables the formation of particles from two materials with vastly different properties. The use of microfluidics affords excellent control over the size, morphology, and monodisper...

“Pitanga” leaf hydroethanolic extract (PLHE) presents high antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The encapsulation of this in W/O/W double emulsions could protect its bioactive properties. objective research was to encapsulate PLHE the inner W phase a emulsion analyze emulsifiers concentrations ratios effects on droplet size physical stability. Moreover, rheological behavior, activities the...
