An extension of the Drude model is proposed that accounts for the spin and spin-orbit interaction of charge carriers. Spin currents appear due to the combined action of the external electric field, crystal field, and scattering of charge carriers. The expression for the spin Hall conductivity is derived for metals and semiconductors that is independent of the scattering mechanism. In cubic meta...

Both electron and phonon transport properties of single layer MoS2 (SLMoS2) are studied. Based on first-principles calculations, the electrical conductivity of SLMoS2 is calculated by Boltzmann equations. The thermal conductivity of SLMoS2 is calculated to be as high as 116.8 Wm(-1) K(-1) by equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The predicted value of ZT is as high as 0.11 at 500 K. As th...

Intrinsic and extrinsic spin Hall effects are considered together on an equal theoretical footing for the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional 2D electron and hole systems, using the diagrammatic method for calculating the spin Hall conductivity. Our analytic theory for the 2D holes shows the expected lowest-order additive result for the spin Hall conductivity. But, the 2D electrons ma...

Effect of solution conductivity on production of H2O2, H2 and O2 generated by the pulsed corona discharge in water has been investigated. Hydrogen was dominant product of plasmachemical activity of the discharge when its formation significantly increased with increasing solution conductivity. Compared to H2O2 its production rose from ratio of 2:1 at 100 μS/cm up to 5:1 at 500 μS/cm. Possible ro...

The crystal structure and numerous normal and superconducting state properties of layered tetragonal (P4/nmm) LaFeAsO, with F-doping of  11 %, are reported. Resistivity measurements give an onset transition temperature Tc = 28.2 K, and low field magnetic susceptibility data indicate bulk superconductivity. In applied magnetic field, analysis of the resistive transition results in a critical fi...

In low-pressure discharges, where the electron mean free path is larger or comparable with the discharge length, the electron dynamics is essentially nonlocal. Moreover, the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) deviates considerably from a Maxwellian. Therefore, an accurate kinetic description of the low-pressure discharges requires knowledge of the nonlocal conductivity operator and ca...

The cross-plane thermal conductivity of four Si/Ge, Si/Si0.4Ge0.6, and Si0.9Ge0.1/Si0.1Ge0.9 superlattices was measured using the 3ω technique. All four superlattices were found to have thermal conductivity values between 1.8 and 3.5 W/m-K, which are below the values of typical SixGe1-x alloys. The growth quality of these superlattices was evaluated qualitatively through the use of x-ray diffra...

Optical excitation typically enhances electrical conduction and low-frequency radiation absorption in semiconductors. We, however, observe a pronounced transient decrease of conductivity in doped monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS(2)), a two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, using ultrafast optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. In particular, the conductivity is reduced to only 30% of its e...

Six types of commercially available multiwall carbon nanotube soot were obtained and prepared into buckypapers by pellet pressing and by filtration into a paper. These samples were evaluated with respect to thickness, compressibility and electrical conductivity. DC conductivity results by two-point and four-point (van der Pauw) measurement methods as a function of preparation parameters are pre...
