Growth of the Avena coleoptile, including elongation and curvature responses, is dependent on the auxin which is produced only by the cells in the extreme apex (4, 12, 13). A polar force is required to direct and control the distribution of this auxin. It frequently has been suggested that the inherent electrical field could function as this force and there is evidence that is consistent with t...

Recent studies suggest that the human immunodeficiency virus transactivator, Tat, increases expression of viral genes primarily by enhancing the efficiency of transcriptional elongation. The degree to which Tat influences elongation may depend on the rate of transcriptional initiation. Current models in which Tat interacts with the transcription complex suggest directions for future studies.

Processive elongation of RNA Polymerase II from a proximal promoter paused state is a rate-limiting event in human gene control. A small number of regulatory factors influence transcription elongation on a global scale. Prior research using small-molecule BET bromodomain inhibitors, such as JQ1, linked BRD4 to context-specific elongation at a limited number of genes associated with massive enha...

Annexins are assumed to be involved in regulating cotton fiber elongation, but direct evidence remains to be presented. Here we cloned six Annexin genes (AnxGb) abundantly expressed in fiber from sea-island cotton (G. barbadense). qRT-PCR results indicated that all six G. barbadense annexin genes were expressed in elongating cotton fibers, while only the expression of AnxGb6 was cotton fiber-sp...

We present a novel modular, stochastic model for biological template-based linear chain elongation processes. In this model, elongation complexes (ECs; DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase, or ribosomes associated with nascent chains) that span a finite number of template units step along the template, one after another, with semaphore constructs preventing overtaking. The central elongation module i...

Although the mechanism of microtubule dynamic instability is thought to involve the hydrolysis of tubulin-bound GTP, the mechanism of GTP hydrolysis and the basis of microtubule stability are controversial. Video microscopy of individual microtubules and dilution protocols were used to examine the size and lifetime of the stabilizing cap. Purified porcine brain tubulin (7-23 microM) was assembl...

BACKGROUND Formin proteins nucleate actin filaments de novo and stay associated with the growing barbed end. Whereas the formin-homology (FH) 2 domains mediate processive association, the FH1 domains-in concert with the actin-monomer-binding protein profilin-increase the rate of barbed-end elongation. The mechanism by which this effect is achieved is not well understood. RESULTS We used total...

Floods are major constraints to crop production worldwide. In low-lying, flood-prone areas of the tropics, longer-term partial submergence (stagnant flooding [SF]) greatly reduces rice yield. This study assesses shoot growth and several physiological mechanisms associated with SF tolerance in rice. Five rice genotypes with contrasting responses to SF were evaluated in field ponds. Following tra...

The role of leaf water relations in controlling cell expansion in leaves of water-stressed maize and barley depends on time scale. Sudden changes in leaf water status, induced by sudden changes in humidity, light and soil salinity, greatly affect leaf elongation rate, but often only transiently. With sufficiently large changes in salinity, leaf elongation rates are persistently reduced. When pl...
