BACKGROUND Esophageal strictures are a common sequela of chemoradiation and/or surgery to the head and neck cancers and can lead to stenosis and significant dysphagia. Endoscopic dilation endoscopic and placement of self-expanding stents are often to used relieve dysphagia symptoms. However, these stents are not without risks and complications. METHODS We present a case of a 58-year-old man w...
Airway complications continue to be an important source of morbidity and mortality following lung transplantation, and bronchial stenosis is the most common manifestation. Such complications have been reported to occur in up to 27% of cases, and 13% of all transplanted patients may require interventional bronchoscopy for treatment. These complications have been attributed to an insufficient blo...
Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is the most common cause of a stricture in the hilar region, and hilar stricture in the absence of any previous surgical intervention should be considered to indicate malignant disease until proven otherwise. We present a rare case of isolated hilar tubercular stricture, all the features of which were suggestive of malignancy.
Results: Two recipients had DKT as an En bloc from pediatric donors, whereas others had DKT from elderly donors. The mean surgical time was 5 hours 4 min (Range: 3 hours 40 min to 6 hours 24 min). Two patients had a complication of lymphocele and subsequent development of ureteric stricture. There was no vessel thrombosis and no urine leakage in this cohort. The creatinine level was 137 (± 37.4...
Three cases of intramural pseudodiverticulosis of the oesophagus are described together with a review of the relevant literature. This unusual condition, diagnosed by characteristic features on the barium swallow, is associated with a high incidence of benign oesophageal stricture which responds readily to endoscopic dilatation.
A one year retrospective study of 76 patients with peptic oesophageal stricture was performed. Analysis of results showed a significant age-related risk of developing peptic oesophageal stricture. Possible age-related risk factors are discussed. Pitfalls in diagnosis and management are highlighted and the role of H2 receptor antagonists, antacids and omeprazole are discussed.
BACKGROUND Esophageal replacement by the colon or the stomach for malignant and nonmalignant esophageal diseases exposes to significant morbidity and mortality. In this setting, tissue engineering seems to be a seductive alternative. METHODS In a porcine model, we performed a 5-cm-long circumferential replacement of the cervical esophagus by a tubulized acellular matrix (small intestinal subm...
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Endoscopic diagnosis of esophageal achalasia lacking typical endoscopic features can be extremely difficult. The aim of this study was to identify simple and reliable early indicator of esophageal achalasia. PATIENTS AND METHODS This single-center retrospective study included 56 cases of esophageal achalasia without previous treatment. As a control, 60 non-achalasia ...
A 77-year-old woman with history of anterior rectal resection for neoplasia in 1998, followed by chemoand radiotherapy, was referred to our unit because of an increase in subocclusive episodes (1–2 times a week) over the previous 5 months, due to a stenosis extending to 5 cm above the colorectal anastomosis. The patient had previously undergone several pneumatic dilation procedures for anastomo...
