We review recent results from the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA on charm and beauty production in ep collisions at 300 318 GeV centre-of-mass energy.

DESY HERA will run from year 2000 onwards with luminosities increased by a factor of about 5, compared to present data taking. The implied changes for the machine and consequences for the H1 and ZEUS detectors as well as examples of the gained physics potential are presented.
