We present a method for automatically generating descriptions of biological events encoded in the KB BIO 101 Knowledge base. We evaluate our approach on a corpus of 336 event descriptions, provide a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results obtained and discuss possible directions for further work.
A novel halogenation/semipinacol rearrangement of α-diazo alcohol catalyzed by Lewis base has been developed through a carbene-free mechanism. This semipinacol transposition, initiated by an electrophilic halogenation (X = Cl(+), Br(+), and I(+)) of diazo carbon event, furnished a convenient synthetic route for the efficient synthesis of α-halo-quaternary ketones under mild conditions.
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are composed of many sensor nodes and a base station for collecting event information from a wide local area. However, an attacker can easily intrude into a network through external nodes by exploiting characteristics of wireless communication and the limited hardware resources of sensor nodes. Specifically, an attacker can intrude into a sensor network and launc...
Genome shrinkage occurs after whole genome duplications (WGDs) and in the evolution of parasitic or symbiotic species. The dynamics of this process, whether it occurs by single gene deletions or also by larger deletions are however unknown. In yeast, genome shrinkage has occurred after a WGD. Using a computational model of genome evolution, we show that in a random genome single gene deletions ...
This paper investigates the use of commonsense reasoning to understand texts involving stereotypical activities or scripts. We present a system that understands news stories involving four terrorism scripts. The system (1) builds a commonsense reasoning problem given an information extraction template representing a terrorist incident, and (2) uses commonsense reasoning and a commonsense knowle...
A bilingual upbringing has been shown to enhance executive control, but the neural mechanisms underpinning such effect are essentially unknown. Here, we investigated whether monolingual and bilingual toddlers differ in semantic processing efficiency and their allocation of attention to expected and unexpected visual stimuli. We simultaneously recorded event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and p...
This paper describes the main aims of a new research project concerned with the implementation of automatic error recovery f ac i l i t i e s in industr ial robotics. An approach is discussed in which an existing manufacturing work ce l l is to be enhanced by the addition of a task event model contained in an error recovery knowledge base. This paper outlines the main design issues involved in ...
This paper analyzes the problem of real-time datadriven detection of outbreaks of disease and discusses our prototype system. A conclusion is that the earliest possible detection of outbreaks requires the synthesis of multiple types of evidence such as biosensor data, clinical data, and epidemiological data. An important source for these data will be electronic medical records. Prior research a...
Accumulating evidence from social neuroscience demonstrates that the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is a crucial component of the neural systems mediating social event knowledge. Here, we present an integrative theory of the cognitive and neural bases of social event knowledge. The structural and temporal representation binding (STRing) theory assumes that the mPFC represents abstract dynamic ...
BACKGROUND In many industrialized countries routine vaccination with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV-23) is recommended to prevent pneumococcal disease in the elderly. However, vaccine-induced immunity wanes after a few years, and there are controversies around revaccination with PPSV-23. Here, we systematically assessed the effectiveness and safety of PPSV-23 revaccinat...
