Recent successes with superconducting Josephson junction qubits make them prime candidates for the implementation of quantum computing. This doctoral thesis details the study of a niobium Josephson junction circuit for quantum computing applications. The thesis covers two main areas: 1) the fabrication of sub-micron niobium Josephson junction devices using a Nb/Al/AlO./Nb trilayer process and 2...

This paper discusses the issues involving the design and fabrication of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL’s). A review of the basic experimental structures is given, with emphasis on recent developments in distributed Bragg reflectors, gain media, as well as current and optical confinement techniques. The paper describes present VCSEL performance, in particular, those involving sel...

This paper presents a study of RF MEMS switch designed to be integrated in tunable filters for applications from W-frequency band to V-frequency band. Along the whole process, we go into detail of each procedure to present a complete study from design to fabrication and characterization of a RF-MEMS switch. The proposed concepts are validated by experimental results.

An optical fibre transducer able to work in high temperatures environments is experimentally demonstrated in the laboratory. It is based on a permanent Long period gratings (PLPG) written using a thermo-mechanical technique. The fabrication technique, the experimental works, their results and the conclusions are presented and discussed in this paper.

The Micro-Accelerator Platform is an optical-wavelength microstructure for laser acceleration of particles, currently under development at UCLA. It is a slab-symmetric structure and can be constructed in layers using existing nanofabrication techniques. We present several possible fabrication techniques and preliminary experimental outcomes for manufacturing this structure.

Low propagation loss and low turning loss are very important for photonic integrated circuits. In this work, the silicon-on-insulator based corner mirrors having high optical transfer efficiency optimized in previous numerical calculation are further validated with FDTD simulation and then fabrication and test. An experimental optical access loss of 0.8dB is obtained.

The Nanostructured Origami 3D Fabrication and Assembly Process is a method of manufacturing 3D nanosystems using exclusively 2D lithography tools. The 3D structure is obtained by folding a nanopatterned 2D substrate. We report on the materials, actuation and modeling aspects of the manufacturing process, and present experimental results from fabricated structures.
