We investigate universal features of the jamming transition in granular materials, colloids and glasses. We show that the jamming transition in these systems has common features: slowing of response to external perturbation, and the onset of structural heterogeneities.

Inspired by the fascinating working process of living systems, materials that can respond to external stimuli (mechanical, chemical, optical changes in environmental conditions, etc.) are of enormous interest owing to their applications in a wide range of fields including microfluidic devices, drug delivery, tissue engineering, sensors and actuators. This review, while being non-exhaustive in l...

Sulfate attack in concrete structures is considered to be among the major durability concerns in civil infrastructure systems. Proper modeling techniques can help us understand the influence of aggressive environments on the concrete performance more readily and accurately. Such an understanding improves the decision making process in every stage of construction and maintenance and will help in...

Influence of external static magnetic fields on solidification, solid phase transformation of metallic materials have been reviewed in terms of Lorentz force, convection, magnetization, orientation, diffusion, and so on. However, the influence of external static magnetic fields on properties of metallic functional materials is rarely reviewed. In this paper, the effect of static magnetic fields...

INTRODUCTION Confinement of biomolecules in structured nanoporous materials offers several desirable features ranging from chemical and thermal stability, to resistance to degradation from the external environment. A new generation of mesoporous materials presents exciting new possibilities for the formulation and controlled release of biological agents. Such materials address niche application...

This work focuses on systems displaying domain patterns resulting from competing external and internal dynamics. To this end, we introduce a Lyapunov functional capable of describing the steady states of systems subject to external forces, by adding nonlocal terms to the Landau Ginzburg free energy of the system. Thereby, we extend the existing methodology treating long-range order interactions...

The importance of noncovalent interactions in the realm of biological materials continues to inspire efforts to create artificial supramolecular polymeric architectures. These types of self-assembled materials hold great promise as environmentally stimuli-responsive materials because they are capable of adjusting their various structural parameters, such as chain length, architecture, conformat...

Following routine coronary arteriography, surface irregularities and thrombogenesis of the inner and outer wall of six Ducor polyurethane and six RPX polyethylene coronary catheters were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Polyurethane catheters had rough and highly irregular external and internal surfaces. All catheters showed adherent thrombi on their external surface. The internal surf...
