A decision support system to assist cage aquaculture managers is presented. The system enables managers to perform four essential tasks: (i) site classification, (ii) site selection, (iii) holding capacity determination, and (iv) economic appraisal of an aquaculture farm at a given site. Based on measurements of water and substrate qualities, hydrometeorology and socioeconomic factors, a cage a...

We investigate the existence of an inverse relationship (IR) between farm size and technical efficiency in Philippine brackishwater pond aquaculture. The study is motivated by the exemption of fish ponds from the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Laws and suggestions in the literature of inefficient management of fish farms. The analysis of technical efficiency is based on the estimation of a multi...

The effects of fish farming on bacterial density, biomass, community structure and their possible link to antibiotic resistance have been investigated in coastal sediments of the Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean). The top 2 cm of the sediment under a fish farm and control areas were analysed during summer 2000. Bacterial density and biomass were three folds higher (up to 3 10 cells/g and 260...

Increasing human population and reliance on aquaculture for seafood will lead to expansion of the industry in the open ocean. To guide environmentally sustainable expansion, coastal stakeholders require tools to evaluate the risks that marine aquaculture poses and to craft science-based policies and practices which safeguard marine ecosystems. We summarized current knowledge regarding dissolved...

Carp is one of the most widely cultivated warm water fish, which has been introduced into many countries. It is essential for the manager of a carp farm to know the production costs and their evolution, showing the main inputs on which the cost reduction is worth effort. In Iran, carp farming is mainly based on common carp, silver carp, grass carp, and bighead carp, which were often reared in p...
