Research on psychological influences on physiology primarily focuses on biological responses during stressful challenges, and how those responses can become dysregulated with prolonged or repeated exposure to stressful circumstances. At the same time, humans spend considerable time recovering from those challenges, and a host of biological processes involved in restoration and repair take place...

The purpose of this paper is to propose certain dynamical principles in biological systems, which can be used to explain the effectiveness of charge transfer or excitation transfer in biological systems. Some of these systems are accessible experimentally.

Since thermal gradients are almost everywhere, thermosensation could represent one of the oldest sensory transduction processes that evolved in organisms. There are many examples of temperature changes affecting the physiology of living cells. Almost all classes of biological macromolecules in a cell (nucleic acids, lipids, proteins) can present a target of the temperature-related stimuli. This...

Biocorrosion and biofouling processes are mediated by microorganisms adhered to the metal surfaces or embedded in a gelatinous matrix called biofilm. Biofilms affect the interaction between metals and the environment not only in deleterious processes like corrosion but also in several biological processes applied to materials recovery and handling. The growth of the microorganisms capable to in...

3 | P a g e Abstract This thesis is concerned with the synthesis and characterisation of TiO2 based photocatalyst thin films and the assessment of their antimicrobial properties. When exposed to light of wavelength less than 380 nm TiO2 films can demonstrate self-cleaning and self-disinfecting properties. This is due to photocatalytic processes occurring on the film surface resulting in film su...

Determinantal point processes (DPPs) have recently been proposed as models for set selection problems where diversity is preferred. For example, they can be used to select diverse sets of sentences to form document summaries, or to find multiple nonoverlapping human poses in an image. However, DPPs conflate the modeling of two distinct characteristics: the size of the set, and its content. For ...

The behavior of a thin curved hyperelastic film bonded to a fixed substrate is described by an energy composed of a nonlinearly hyperelastic energy term and a debonding interfacial energy term. We compute the Γ-limit of this energy under a noninterpenetration constraint that prohibits penetration of the film into the substrate without excluding contact between them.

Diffusion Processes such as Brownian motions and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes are the classes of stochastic processes that have been investigated by researchers in various disciplines including biological sciences. It is usually assumed that the outcomes of these processes are laid on the Euclidean spaces. However, some data in physical, chemical and biological phenomena indicate that they cann...

A computational analysis of flow in simplex fuel atomizers using the arbitrary-Lagrangian–Eulerian method is presented. It is well established that the geometry of an atomizer plays an important role in governing its performance. We have investigated the effect on atomizer performance of four geometric parameters, namely, inlet slot angle, spin chamber convergence angle, trumpet angle, and trum...

A liquid film is studied that is deposited onto a flat plate that is inclined at a constant angle to the horizontal and is extracted from a liquid bath at a constant speed. We analyse steady-state solutions of a long-wave evolution equation for the film thickness. Using centre manifold theory, we first obtain an asymptotic expansion of solutions in the bath region. The presence of an additional...
