In the title compound, C(28)H(21)Cl, the dihedral angle between the two fluorene ring systems is 71.97 (4)°. There is an intra-molecular C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bond. In the crystal structure, the centroid-to-centroid distance between stacked fluorene ring systems is ca 4.22 Å, which indicates that there are no π-π stacking inter-actions between them.

Chirality induction into a uniform, star-shaped fluorene oligomer with a central truxene moiety (T3) was achieved using circularly polarized light in the presence of achiral fluorene or phenanthrene. Induction into T3 alone was difficult, suggesting that close chain packing realized through interactions of T3 with small molecules plays a role in chirality induction.

In the title compound, C(25)H(22)O, the dihedral angle between the benzofuran and fluorene ring systems is 9.06 (6)°, and that between the two benzene rings of the fluorene system is 1.78 (12)°. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯π inter-actions help to stabilize the crystal structure.
