Analysis of metabolomic profiling data from gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) measurements usually relies upon reference libraries of metabolite mass spectra to structurally identify and track metabolites. In general, techniques to enumerate and track unidentified metabolites are nonsystematic and require manual curation. We present a method and software implementation, freely availa...

The questions of whether the dose of drug that is consumed corresponds to drug concentration levels in hair and how results of hair analyses can be interpreted are still debated. The aim of this study was to investigate (1) whether there is a correlation between doses of Methamphetamine (MA) use and MA concentration levels in hair and (2) whether results of hair analyses can be used to estimate...

The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique was employed to characterize n-decane oxidation products of Corynebacterium strains 7E1C and 269 (SNAM Progetti collection) after 73 h of incubation at 35 C. Corynebacterium 7E1C accumulated consistent amounts of esters of long chain acids with long chain alcohols, mainly decyldecanoate as well as products with mono- and diterminal carboxylic f...

Production of renewable commodity chemicals from bio-oil derived from fast pyrolysis of biomass has received considerable interests, but hindered by the presence of innumerable components in bio-oil. In present work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated an innovative approach combining atmospheric distillation of bio-oil with co-pyrolysis for mass production of renewable chemicals from b...

Analysis of highly purified extracts from spinach shoots by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry has demonstrated the presence of six 13-C-hydroxylated gibberellins (GAs): GA(53), GA(44), GA(19), GA(17), GA(20), and GA(29). The major GAs were GA(17), GA(19), and GA(20), whereas the other three GAs occurred in trace amounts. Structural considerations suggest that the six GAs identified ...

There is a growing market for the use of hydrolysates from animal side-streams for production of high-protein supplements. However, there can be issues with development of off-flavors, either due to the raw material in question or due to the hydrolysis process itself. This study examined the development of volatile compounds during hydrolysis of hemoglobin. Briefly, porcine hemoglobin was hydro...

Myo-inositol (MI) is one of the stereoisomers of hexahydroxycyclohexane, which plays an important role in intracellular signal pathway. Derivatization is an indispensable step in both external and internal standard method during the chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) detection, as MI can't be ionized directly. It is valuable to optimize the derivative process and the detection volume for ...

Cultures of Penicillium expansum produce a musty, earthy odor. Geosmin [1,10-trans-dimethyl-trans(9)-decalol] was identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry from headspace samples of P. expansum cultures. Olfactory comparison of P. expansum cultures with a geosmin standard indicated geosmin is the primary component of the odor associated with P. expansum.

A 78-year-old woman was found dead in her basement. Qualitative screening of available postmortem specimens detected the presence of diltiazem and pentoxifylline. Quantitations were carried out by gas chromatography using nitrogen-phosphorus detection and confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with the following results: blood, 0.59 mg/dL diltiazem and 0.63 mg/dL pentoxifylline; urin...
