We use referential translation machines for predicting the semantic similarity of text in all STS tasks which contain Arabic, English, Spanish, and Turkish this year. RTMs pioneer a language independent approach to semantic similarity and remove the need to access any task or domain specific information or resource. RTMs become 6th out of 52 submissions in Spanish to English STS. We average pre...

It is sixty years since penicillin was first used to treat syphilis and, as a consequence, the ravages of its tertiary stage have faded from medical memory. All the more enlightening then to read this excellent first English translation of La Doulou (1930), a personal account of neurosyphilis written by the French novelist, playwright and journalist, Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897). Although largel...

We report a novel possibility for extracting a small subset of a data base which contains all the information necessary to solve a given classification task: using the Support Vector Algo rithm to train three different types of handwritten digit classifiers, we observed that these types of classifiers construct their decision surface from strongly overlapping small (k: 4%) subsets of the data b...

We outline several fundamental themes for the WPS Handbook of the Futures Markets. The Handbook as the others in the same series intends to be a definitive source for comprehensive and accessible information in futures markets. The emphasis is on the unique characteristics of futures markets that make them worthy of a special volume. In our judgment, futures markets are currently undergoing rem...

We consider sparse learning binary classification problems solved with linear support vector machines. We present two popular methods for variable selection: SVM-Recursive Feature algorithm and 1-norm SVM, and propose a third hybrid 1-norm RFE. Finally, we implement this three algorithms and compare their performances on synthetic and microarray datasets. 1-norm SVM gives the lowest test accura...

Background: In class prediction problems using microarray data, gene selection is essential to improve the prediction accuracy and to identify potential marker genes for a disease. Among numerous existing methods for gene selection, support vector machine-based recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) has become one of the leading methods and is being widely used. The SVM-based approach performs...

We report the first implementation of a 2 μm thulium fiber laser in a Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy system. Emission from plasma on copper samples was analyzed from 200 to 900 nm. The low ablation fluence (<100 J.cm −2 ) and 200 ns pulse duration lead to a plasma with neither continuum emission, nor air emission in the near-infrared region. ©2010 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (0...
