Wc present a general theory for the cqui l ibr ium currcnt distr ibution in a two-dimensional interacting clectron gas. subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field, and confined by a potential that varies slowly on the scale of the magnetic length. The distr ibution is found to general ly consist of str ips or channels of current, which alternate in direct ion, and which have univcrsal integrat...

It is well-established that high spin-orbit coupling (SOC) materials convert a charge current density into a spin current density which can be used to switch a magnet efficiently and there is increasing interest in identifying materials with large spin Hall angle for lower switching current. Using experimentally benchmarked models, we show that composite structures can be designed using existin...

We theoretically examine the spin-transfer torque in the presence of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) at impurities in a ferromagnetic metal on the basis of linear response theory. We obtained, in addition to the usual spin-transfer torque, a new contributioin ∼ jSH ·∇n in the first order in SOI, where jSH is the spin Hall current driven by an external electric field. This is a reaction to inverse ...

Traditional current transformers (CTs) suffer from DC and AC saturation and remanent magnetization in many industrial applications. Moreover, the drawbacks of traditional CTs, such as closed iron cores, bulky volume, and heavy weight, further limit the development of an intelligent power protection system. In order to compensate for these drawbacks, we proposed a novel current measurement metho...

A theoretical mean field closure for Hall magnetohydrodynamics (Hall-MHD) is developed to investigate magnetic field generation through dynamo processes in low electron density astrophysical systems. We show that by modifying the dynamics of microscopic flows, the Hall currents could have a profound impact on the generation of macroscopic magnetic fields. As an illustrative example, we show how...

Measurements of the internal distribution of B in magnetically confined plasmas are required to obtain current profiles via equilibrium reconstruction with sufficient accuracy to challenge stability theory. A 16-channel linear array of InSb Hall effect sensors with 7.5 mm spatial resolution has been constructed to directly measure internal B(z)(R,t) for determination of J(ψ,t) associated with e...

We report on experimental observations that the two-fluid Hall dynamo plays an important role in plasma relaxation. Measurements of the Hall effect during relaxation are made in the plasma core and edge. The Hall dynamo is found to be small at the edge ( ! r /a " 0.85) but increases substantially towards the interior (r/a=0.82) as measured by probes. In the high-temperature plasma core (r/a=0.3...

Calculation of Hall coefficient in semiclassical approach requires the first and the second derivatives of the energy bands at the Fermi level. We use the Maximally Localized Wannier Function technique to determine the required band derivatives and calculate the ordinary Hall conductivity and ordinary Hall coefficient in Al,Cu, Pd, Li, Au, Ag and Pb cubic metals.

Nonlocal spin transport in nanostructured devices with ferromagnetic injector (F1) and detector (F2) electrodes connected to a normal conductor (N) is studied. We reveal how the spin transport depends on interface resistance, electrode resistance, spin polarization and spin diffusion length, and obtain the conditions for efficient spin injection, spin accumulation and spin current in the device...

This paper employs an analytic reconnection model to investigate the conditions under which Hall currents can influence reconnection and Ohmic dissipation rates. It is first noted that time dependent magnetohydrodynamic systems can be analyzed by decomposing the magnetic and velocity fields into guide field and reconnecting field components. A formally exact solution shows that Hall currents ca...
