We describe the results of a policy of highly selective splintage for CDH, using knee plasters. No child suffered because splintage was withheld. In those who were treated the results were satisfactory and the proportion who required a subsequent operation was extremely low. Avascular necrosis was not a significant problem. The method, although a little more time consuming, appears to offer sig...

When congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) is diagnosed only after walking age, management is greatly complicated. In view of the increasing number of such cases treated by members of the French Society of Paediatric Orthopaedics (SOFOP) in recent years, a 3-part study was conducted within the Society to shed light on the reasons for late diagnosis, to give an update on treatment strategies c...

The effects of breathing on body roll have been previously investigated for the roll of the whole trunk only. The purposes of this study were: to calculate separately the shoulder roll (SR) and hip roll (HR) of swimmers during front crawl for non-breathing and preferred-side breathing conditions; to assess the differences in the magnitude and temporal characteristics of these variables between ...

Posterior fracture-dislocation of hip is uncommonly encountered in rugby injuries. We report such a case in an adult while playing rugby. The treating orthopaedician can be caught unaware and injuries in such sports can be potentially misdiagnosed as hip sprains. Immediate reduction of the dislocation was performed in theatres. The fracture was fixed with two lag screws and a neutralization pla...

INTRODUCTION Post traumatic hip dislocations are very rare in children. Neglected anterior hip dislocations in children are not described in literature so far. Here, we present a case of 6 weeks old anterior hip dislocation successfully managed by open reduction. CASE PRESENTATION A 9-year-old male child presented with neglected anterior hip dislocation on left side. Open reduction carried ou...

Hip displacement in cerebral palsy is a common problem. The muscle imbalance and spasticity can lead to abnormal deforming forces which act on the hip joint resulting in acetabular dysplasia and femoral head migration. The patients suffer painful seating, abnormal gait and difficulty in personal hygiene. There are various treatment options to address this problem depending on the patient’s age,...

This report describes a rare case of concomitant ipsilateral pelvic disruption, hip dislocation, a femoral shaft fracture, supra and intercondylar fracture of the femur, and tibial shaft fracture in a young man who suffered a fall from a moving truck. The hip dislocation was reduced under general anaesthesia with a closed procedure. Both femoral shaft and distal femoral fractures were reduced a...

Between 1949 and 1972, 24 children under the age of 16 years were admitted to Middlemore Hospital with traumatic dislocation of a hip. Half of these were between 12 and 15 years of age, and there was a predominance of boys in the ratio of 7:1. A survey of these children supports the view that the hip joint of a child becomes dislocated more readily than that of an adult.

Management of geriatric hip fractures in a protocol-driven center can improve outcomes and reduce costs. Nonetheless, this approach has not spread as broadly as the effectiveness data would imply. One possible explanation is that operating such a center is not perceived as financially worthwhile. To assess the economic viability of dedicated hip fracture centers, the authors built a financial m...

Bilateral traumatic hip dislocations are extremely rare. Most of these are related to acetabular or proximal femoral fractures, consisting of complex lesions, and are rarely pure ligamentous injuries. Posterior dislocation is the most frequent. Some dislocations are accompanied by sciatic nerve palsy. The present case is a posterior bilateral hip dislocation with no other associated lesions, th...
