This paper presents an application of the Dempster-Shafer evidence combination scheme in building a rule based expert system shell for diagnostic reasoning. Domain knowledge is stored as rules with associated belief functions. The reasoning component uses a combination of forward and backward inferencing mechanisms to interact with the user in a mixed initiative format.
Firstly, this paper presents fuzzy logic based approaches for building a tool for measuring ereadiness of a country. This paper proposes fuzzy logic for realizing the measuring tool as fuzzy logic allows processing of heterogeneous indicators and imprecise values assigned for them. The tool is constructed by using one or more fuzzy logic based inference engines. Secondly, due to the problems in...
We define an inference system to capture explanations based on causal statements, using an ontology in the form of an IS-A hierarchy. We first introduce a simple logical language which makes it possible to express that a fact causes another fact and that a fact explains another fact. We present a set of formal inference patterns from causal statements to explanation statements. These patterns e...
In this paper we point out the reasons that lead us to distribute modular applications and how we distribute them. We illustrate our ideas with an example of expert system shell.
This study addresses the problem of modeling physiological systems using fuzzy logic. As an application we consider the problem of modeling the anesthetics process. In particular we consider the problem of modeling the evolution of the bispectral index in patients undergoing anesthesia with intravenous propofol. An identification based on fuzzy inference system is proposed. One of the main adva...
During the last decade, SMT solvers have seen impressive improvements in performance, features and popularity, and nowadays they are routinely applied as reasoning engines in several domains. The annual SMT solvers competition, SMT-COMP, has been one of the main factors contributing to this success since its first edition in 2005. In order to maintain its significance and positive impact, SMT-C...
When an earthquake occurs, seismologists want to use recorded seismograms to infer its location, magnitude and source-focal mechanism as quickly as possible. If such information could be determined immediately, timely evacuations and emergency actions could be undertaken to mitigate earthquake damage. Current advanced methods can report the initial location and magnitude of an earthquake within...
Rule-driven processing is a proven way of achieving high-speed in fuzzy processing. Up to now, ruledriven architectures where designed to work with minimum or product as T-norm. Nevertheless, a Lukasiewicz T-norm is typically used with the compositional rule of inference in expert systems applications that are based on a fuzzy inference engine. This paper presents a rule-driven processing archi...
We describe an integrated belief-desire-intention (BDI) architecture that is capable of acting in service of inference and vice versa. The results are achieved by identifying the relationship between inference and acting, and making certain architectural and ontological commitments. A single module called a rational engine operates on a uniform representation of beliefs, acts, plans, and reason...
This paper describes the development of a fuzzy inference system under the MATLAB platform. The system uses three distinct Gaussian distribution fuzzy membership functions in order to estimate the partial and the overall risk indices due to wild fires in the southern part of Greece. The behavior of each curve has been investigated in order to determine which one fits better for the specific pro...
