A new model that describes the influence of a laser intracavity frequency shifter is proposed. Laser line broadening that is due to the presence of the frequency shift is derived. The theoretical model is validated by experimental results. Multiwavelength operation of this laser is explained.

We report on a highly efficient waveguide resonator device for the production of 775 nm light using a titanium indiffused LiNbO3 waveguide resonator. The device stably produces up to 110 mW of second harmonic power with 140 mW incident on the device an external conversion efficiency of 75%. The cavity length is also locked, using a Pound-Drever-Hall type locking scheme, via one of two methods i...

High-power and highly directional semiconductor microcylinder lasers based on an optical resonator with deformed cross section are reported. In the favorable directions of the far-field, a power increase of up to three orders of magnitude over the conventional circularly symmetric lasers was obtained. A "bow-tie"-shaped resonance is responsible for the improved performance of the lasers in the ...

Optical Q factor measurements are performed on a whispering gallery mode (WGM) disk resonator using a microwave frequency domain approach instead of using an optical domain approach. An absence of hysteretic behavior and a better linearity are obtained when performing linewidth measurements by using a microwave modulation for scanning the resonances instead of the piezoelectric-based frequency ...

The wavelength selective linear absorption in communication C-band is investigated in CMOS-processed PECVD silicon nitride rings. In the overcoupled region, the linear absorption loss lowers the on-resonance transmission of a ring resonator and increases its overall quality factor. Both the linear absorption and ring quality factor are maximized near 1520 nm. The direct heating by phonon absorp...

We have developed a theory that unifies the analysis of the modal properties of surface-emitting chirped circular grating lasers. This theory is based on solving the resonance conditions which involve two types of reflectivities of chirped circular gratings. This approach is shown to be in agreement with previous derivations which use the characteristic equations. Utilizing this unified analysi...

We experimentally demonstrate feedback controlling of the resonant wavelength of a silicon dual-ring resonator. The feedback signal is the difference in optical scattering from the two coupled microring resonators, and the control mechanism is based on thermo-optic tuning with micro-heaters. This control scheme keeps the central wavelength of the resonator aligning with the input wavelength, wh...

We present the characterization of the recently developed cavity enhanced amplitude modulation laser absorption spectroscopy (CEAMLAS) technique to measure dissipation within the evanescent field of a whispering-gallery mode resonator, and demonstrate the parallel use of CEAMLAS and the Pound-Drever-Hall measurement techniques to provide both dissipation and dispersive real-time microresonator ...

Previous second-harmonic-generation experiments on metallic split-ring-resonator arrays have been performed at fixed fundamental laser center frequency. Here, we perform nonlinear optical spectroscopy on a first set of samples, revealing pronounced resonances. Furthermore, to clarify the role of higher-order split-ring resonances, we perform additional experiments on a second set of samples in ...

The frequency resolution of an active waveguide ring resonator spectrometer is fundamentally limited by spontaneous emission noise produced by the gain medium. A closed-form expression for this resolution is derived, and the result is used to determine the minimum, rms, angular rotation rate, random walk error achievable by an active ring resonator gyroscope. An active waveguide ring resonator ...
