h 1989, two levels each of stand density and fertilization were factorially established in an 8-year-old loblolly pine plantation on a P-deficient site. Levels of stand density were nonthinned at 2,732 trees per hectare and thinned at 721 trees per hectare. Fertilizer levels were none or application of 150 kilograms P plus 135 kilograms N per hectare. In 1994, stand basal areas of the nonthinne...

Predicted future changes in air temperature and atmospheric CO(2) concentration ([CO(2)]), coupled with altered precipitation, are expected to substantially affect tree growth. Effects on growth may vary considerably across a species range, as temperatures vary from sub-optimal to supra-optimal for growth. We performed an experiment simultaneously at two locations in the current range of loblol...

The age of intensive plantation forestry in the Southeastern US rapidly approaches. Based on data through age 9 from loblolly pine plantations subjected to complete weed control and multiple fertilizations, growth rates to be expected equal or exceed those for southern pines grown in other countries under intensive cultural practices. Predictions of continuing growth through age 15 and economic...

Intensive forest management led to elevated losses of nitrogen from a recently harvested loblolly pine plantation in North Carolina. Measurements of nitrogen-15 retention in the field demonstrated that microbial uptake of nitrogen during the decomposition of residual organic material was the most important process retaining nitrogen. Management practices that remove this material cause increase...

methods for estimating the means and covariances of stumpage prices and incorporating _._ th m in harvest scheduling models. We approached the esti ation problem by fitting timeseries models to loblolly pine sawtimber and pulpwood stumpage prices in Georgia, USA, _= and deriving formulas for means and covariances of price predictions. Statistical evidence _ supported integrated autoregressive m...

We investigated the influence of shelterwood conditions on water relations and growth of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings on two harsh sites in eastern Texas. Site I was harvested to provide four overstory density treatments (0, 2.3, 4.6 and 9.2 m(2) of residual basal area per ha). To quantify the effects of overstory competition, trenched and nontrenched subplots, each containing 25 on...

Despite their prevalence and importance, the genome sequences of loblolly pine, Norway spruce, and white spruce, three ecologically and economically important conifer species, are just becoming available to the research community. Following the completion of these large assemblies, annotation efforts will be undertaken to characterize the reference sequences. Accurate annotation of these ancien...

The principles behind self-thinning laws and stand density management diagrams are examined. Relationships are analyzed based on trajectories of unthinned and thinned stands in a 3-dimensional state space. Limiting self-thinning lines and planes are demonstrated using a dynamic stand growth model for loblolly pine.
