Diploid parthenogenesis, with rare sex, is considered as the basic mode of reproduction among the hermaphroditic and viviparous Gyrodactylus. A particular strain of the monogenean parasite Gyrodactylus salaris (RBT clone) was recognized by an invariable, unique mitochondrial DNA haplotype in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms. The RBT clone was shown to be triploid and asexual by analyzi...

The North American freshwater sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus (Centrarchidae), was found in a pond outside Oslo, Norway in October 2005. The large number of fish (>100) in the pond suggests successful reproduction. Two monogenean parasites, nonnative to Norway, were found on the gill filaments of the fish. The origin of the fish and associated parasites is not known.

Factors affecting survival of parasites introduced to new geographical regions include changes in environmental temperature. Protopolystoma xenopodis is a monogenean introduced with the amphibian Xenopus laevis from South Africa to Wales (probably in the 1960s) where low water temperatures impose major constraints on life-cycle processes. Effects were quantified by maintenance of eggs from infe...

Ectoparasites face a daily challenge: to remain attached to their hosts. Polyopisthocotylean monogeneans usually attach to the surface of fish gills using highly specialized structures, the sclerotized clamps. In the original description of the protomicrocotylid species Lethacotyle fijiensis, described 60 years ago, the clamps were considered to be absent but few specimens were available and th...

The Caspian frisian roach (Rutilus frisii kutum), economically a very important fish species in Iran, is propagated in fishponds, reared into the rivers in fingerling size and then harvested from the Caspian Sea in adult stage. We found six monogenean parasites on the Caspian frisian roach including five Dactylogyrus spp. on fingerlings cultured in fishponds and rivers and two Dactylogyrus spp....

An environment intensively studied from many perspectives, through the efforts of an interdisciplinary team of biologists, ecologists, geneticists, chemists, pedologists, etc. is Moara Domnească agroecosystem. Located in the North-East of Bucharest, the Moara Domnească Lake is used for irrigation of the neighbouring agricultural areas and also for pisciculture (Stavrescu-Bedivan et al., 2011). ...
