It is known that Dodgson’s rule is computationally very demanding. Tideman (1987) suggested an approximation to it but did not investigate how often his approximation selects the Dodgson winner. We show that under the Impartial Culture assumption the probability that the Tideman winner is the Dodgson winner tend to 1. However we show that the convergence of this probability to 1 is slow. We sug...

Two people have a full B-gallon jug of wine and two empty jugs of capacity M and S, respectively, where B= M +S. Any jug may be poured into any other jug until either the first one is empty or the second is full. What is the quickest way for them to divide the wine equally? We solve this problem and show that a natural related problem may be solved in polynomial time.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) ensures the stabilization of the foveal image during head movements. The VOR can be characterized by the gains in both the velocity (eye velocity divided by head velocity) and position (eye position divided by head position) domains. In the absence of quick phases, velocity and position gains are equivalent. Vestibular slow phases are usually interrupted by ant...

The combined peak U.S. annual sales potential (excluding disease modification) for the PD indications alone is estimated to be in the range of $1.8bn to $2.7bn , (source Michael J Fox Foundation 2011). Datamonitor market research with PD specialists in the U.S., EU, China and India show that dipraglurant has an attractive product profile and can capture over $1 billion in annual revenues if ful...

METHODS Cell isolation Single ventricular myocytes were isolated from New Zealand White rabbits using standard enzymatic techniques. All procedures were performed in accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals published by the US National Institutes of Health and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Animals were anaesthetized with sodium pentobar...

transplantation, so interdependent in clinical practice. It is an exciting story. As medical students in the 1950s, we were told by Professor Max Rosenheim, who later played a substantial role in examining cross infection in dialysis units, about the transplantation ofa kidney between two identical twins. We were warned that to fail to ask the potentially life-saving question about the existenc...

By using a simple assay composed of purified proteins, we studied the spontaneous polarization of actin networks polymerizing on spherical beads, which subsequently undergo movement. We show evidence that this symmetry breaking is based on the release of elastic energy, analogous to the fracture of polymer gels. The dynamics of this process and the thickness at which it occurs depend on the gro...
