Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a malignant epithelial neoplasm composed of varying proportions of mucous, epidermoid, intermediate, columnar, and clear cells and often demonstrates prominent cystic growth. MEC is usually subclassified as low, intermediate, or high grade on the basis of its histologic features, including the presence of cystic spaces, cellular differentiation, proportion of m...

This paper reports a well-differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma containing numerous melanocytes in the parenchyma in a middle-aged Japanese man. In addition to the characteristic histopathologic features of well-differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma, various-formed and -sized, pigmented cells were widely distributed in the parenchyma. Many of these were considered to be melanocytes containi...

Background: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (MECxPA) is an extremely rare salivary gland malignancy. With only nine prior reported cases, this entity represents a challenging histopathological diagnosis. Methods: We present a case of a 71-year-old male with an enlarging left neck mass over several months. CT showed both a parapharyngeal space mass and a separate level II neck ma...

background and aims. although salivary gland tumors are not very common, early diagnosis and treatment is crucial because of their proximity to vital organs, and therefore, determining the efficacy of new imaging procedures becomes important. this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of magnetic resonance imaging (mri) and color doppler ultrasonography parameters in the diagnosis and differenti...

Histologic grade is a significant predictor of outcome in salivary gland carcinomas. However, the sheer variety of tumor type and the rarity of these tumors pose challenges to devising highly predictive grading schemes. As our knowledge base has evolved, it is clear that carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma is not automatically a high grade tumor as is traditionally suggested. These tumors should b...

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas mostly occur in the major salivary glands, the minor salivary glands of oral cavity and in the lacrimal glands. These tumours rarely occur in the sino-nasal tract. When they occur in the sino-nasal tract, the most frequent site is the maxillary antrum, followed by the nasal cavity, the nasopharynx and the ethmoidal sinuses. As per review of literature, nasopharyngeal m...

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare conjunctival neoplasm that is a common malignancy in the salivary glands. In the conjunctiva it often mimics squamous cell carcinoma. Histologically the tumors are believed to arise from pluripotential basal cells and, possibly, mucussecreting elements, and therefore are composed of mucus-secreting cells intermixed with epidermoid cells. The clear cell variant...

Primary intra-osseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from jaw is an extremely rare condition accounting to less than 2% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas. In the jaw, it occurs more commonly in mandible than maxilla. They are low-grade cancers and affect jaw as uni- or multi-locular radiographic lesions. Here we discuss a rare case of giant cystic primary intra-cystic mucoepidermoid carcinoma ...

BACKGROUND Salivary gland tumors represent 1% of head and neck tumors, with only 5% of these occurring in patients younger than 20 years. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is one of the most frequent salivary gland cancers among adults and children. METHODS This survey was conducted among 34 French pediatric oncology departments. From 1980 to 2000, 18 cases were reported. RESULTS Treatment inc...

A single case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the lacrimal sac was considered worth reporting as there are only four other cases described in the literature. The importance of the correct histological diagnosis and the management are discussed. This appears to be the first study of the ultrastructure of lacrimal sac mucoepidermoid tumour.
