We investigate the use of an optical parametric oscillator (OPO), which can generate relatively high-flux light with strong non-classical features, as a source for quantum lithography. This builds on the proposal of Boto et al (2000 Phys. Rev. Lett. 85 2733), for etching simple patterns on multi-photon absorbing materials with sub-Rayleigh resolution, using two-mode entangled states of light. W...

We investigated the propagation of singleand multi-mode terahertz (THz) radiation through a parallel-plate waveguide for various gap sizes of the plates and polarizations of the incoming THz eld. Single TEM (TM0) and TE1 modes within the 4-THz frequency range propagated through a waveguide with a plate separation of 103 m. Multi TE and TM modes were observed for a 360m separation. High-order mo...

We discuss the Nambu-Goldstone boson and the WardTakahashi identity in a system with spontaneous symmetry breaking. We give a formula for the Nambu-Goldstone boson for a general transformation group G. The Ward-Takahashi identity is modified in the presence of the Nambu-Goldstone boson. We apply this theory to examine low-excitation modes in superconductors. In a multi-gap superconductor, the m...

Nonlinear polaritons in microcavity wires are demonstrated to exhibit multi-stable behavior and rich dynamics, including filamentation and soliton formation. We find that the multi-stability originates from co-existence of different transverse cavity modes. Modulational stability and conditions for multi-mode polariton solitons are studied. Soliton propagation in tilted, relative to the pump mo...

We derive exact analytical solutions describing multi-soliton complexes and their interactions on top of a multi-component background in media with self-focusing or self-defocusing Kerr-like nonlinearities. These results are illustrated by numerical examples which demonstrate soliton collisions and ®eld decomposition between localized and radiation modes.

By the integration of high speed computer networks and interactive multi-media workstations, the IRI (Interactive Remote Instruction) System creates a geographically dispersed virtual classroom. Each student participates using a personal workstation which can be used to view multi-media class presentations, to make presentations, to take notes in a multi-media notebook, and to interact via audi...

An object model of multi-modal transport networks is developed with particular emphasis on applications in trip planning. The model caters for both public and private transport modes, and incorporates spatial and temporal data. A uniform approach to optimum trip nding across multi-modal transport networks is developed. The multi-modal network is spatially ordered using a quadtree storage object...

Multi-component data are not usually processed with specifically designed procedures, but with procedures analogous to the ones used for single-component data. Commonly, the vertical and horizontal components of the data are taken as proxies for P and S wave modes which are imaged independently with the acoustic wave equation. This procedure works only if the vertical and horizontal component a...

A technique is presented for condensing a multi-degree-of-freedom flutter calculation so that similar flutter conditions are achieved with two degrees-of-freedom. Use is made of digital computer programmes, and the process is largely automatic. Examples of the application of the technique are given, and show that systems can often be reduced to two normal modes, or to two orthogonal combination...
