Primary segmental volvulus (PSV) of the ileum in neonate occurs rarely but shows an aggressive clinical course. Thus, early diagnosis is important to prevent necrosis and perforation of the intestine. We report a case of PSV of the ileum in a 2-day-old female neonate whose clinical features and radiologic findings appeared to be meconium plug syndrome.
The management of a neonate with a known difficult airway is a challenge to any clinician. We report a four-day-old neonate with a known difficult airway, who presented to us for rigid bronchoscopy. We used an innovative, economical and easily available adult central venous line guidewire to secure the airway and reintubate the child.
New Candida species may cause bloodstream infections challenging current therapeutic approaches because of unpredictable susceptibility and virulence. In the present report, we describe a fungemia case due to Candida pulcherrima in a premature neonate. After full in vitro diagnostic workup, the neonate was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B and micafungin achieving rapid fungal ...
background and aim: respiratory distress syndrome (rds) is a lung disorder, which can damage the auditory brainstem pathways because of hypoxia. the aim of this study was to evaluate brainstem auditory electrophysiology changes of neonates with rds. methods: fifteen term neonates who suffered from rds, 15 term neonates admitted in the nicu for any reason except rds, and 15 normal term neonates ...
Management of a neonate with cleft lip and palate and assuring the parents regarding the future well being of the child can be a challenging task. Timely referral by pediatrician and treatment by an Orthodontist and a Plastic Surgeon can help in limiting the deformity to its minimum and aid in normal growth and development of the child. This paper describes the treatment of two neonates with un...
Loeys-Dietz syndrome is a recently-characterised genetic disorder with an autosomal-dominant inheritance due to mutations in the transforming growth factor beta-receptor Type 1 or Type 2 genes. We present a Chinese female neonate with genetically-confirmed Loeys-Dietz syndrome, cleft palate, hypertelorism, and an early dilatation of the aortic root and ascending aorta. This syndrome is associat...
Amino acids and proteins play a pivotal role during growth and development. Besides acting as building blocks during tissue synthesis, amino acids or proteins act specifically by upregulating defense systems or by stimulating key sites in metabolic pathways. Following premature birth, the neonatologist is responsible for delivering the right amount and quality of nutrients to the neonate, while...
Hypoglycemia in a neonate is defined as blood sugar value below 40 mg/dL. It is commonly associated with a variety of neonatal conditions like prematurity, intrauterine growth restriction and maternal diabetes. Screening for hypoglycemia in high-risk situations is recommended. Supervised breast-feeding may be an initial treatment option in asymptomatic hypoglycemia. However, symptomatic hypogly...
Recent reports have suggested that environmental chemicals may be associated with endocrine alterations in people, wildlife, and experimental animals. Pharmacological investigations as well as natural poisoning episodes have led to the association between exogenous chemicals and alterations in multiple hormonal systems. Persistent environmental contaminants such as dioxins and PCBs have been sh...
Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POP) is a relatively common reactive gingival growth of uncertain pathogenesis.' In the literature, this pathologic lesion sometimes has been described as an ossifying fibroid epulis, a peripheral fibroma with calcification or a calcifying granuloma. In 1982, Gardner recommended that the only term used to describe this entity should be POP. POP are seen usually in ...
