OBJECTIVE During the past 2 decades, celiac disease (CD) has been recognized as a multisystem autoimmune disorder. A growing body of distinct neurologic conditions such as cerebellar ataxia, epilepsy, myoclonic ataxia, chronic neuropathies, and dementia have been reported, mainly in middle-aged adults. There still are insufficient data on the association of CD with various neurologic disorders ...

The dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNET) is a newly recognized brain tumor with distinctive clinicopathological features and a favourable prognosis. All DNTs are benign supratentorial tumor most commonly located in the temporal lobe and usually cause no neurologic deficit. Clinically, DNT is usually associated with chronic intractable epilepsy in adolescents and young adults. DNET comm...

Vasospasm (VSP) is one of the major causes for prolonged neurologic deficit in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Few case series have reported about continuous local intra-arterial nimodipine administration (CLINA) in refractory VSP. We report our experience with CLINA in a patient with refractory cerebral VSP.

We report a case of epidural extension of pleural empyema with cord compression and neurologic deficit. Surgical decompression was required and emergency bilateral laminectomy was performed with removal of abscess and granulation tissue. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus grew in cultures of pleural and epidural specimens and appropriate intravenous antibiotics were started. In spite o...

Clinical presentation of carotid artery dissection (CAD) is variable, including acute or subacute headache, cervical pain, or focal neurologic deficit that occurs spontaneously, after a high-speed neck manipulation, or trauma. Isolated lower cranial nerve palsy in carotid dissection is uncommon.

A case of acute methanol intoxication is presented, in which bilateral putaminal hemorrhage developed after hemodialysis. Even though the patient was initially comatose and profoundly acidotic, favorable outcome was achieved, with long-term neurologic impairments essentially restricted to mild crural paraparesis, retrograde amnesia, and marked visual deficit. A comparative literature review is ...

Intraspinal subdural lipomas are rare tumors of the spinal canal. Such tumors occur in the thoracic and cervical region; however, extension into the posterior fossa and fourth ventricle is most unusual. We describe two children, an infant and a teenager, with progressive neurologic deficit from such a lipomatous tumor. The lipoma in the infant extended into the lower fourth ventricle and caused...

BACKGROUND Neurologic deficit caused by cerebral ischemia defines the outcome of carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Although few patients have clinically evident neurologic deficit, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) presents a number of cases with ischemic brain lesions. This study should elucidate preoperative risk factors for perioperative microemboli that cause brain infarction. METHODS We studi...

BACKGROUND Cervical (C)-spine clearance protocols exist both to identify traumatic injury and to expedite rigid collar removal. Computed tomography (CT) of the C-spine in trauma patients facilitates the removal of immobilization collars in patients who are neurologically intact, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become an indispensable adjunct for evaluating trauma patients with neurolog...

Three patients with Chediak-Higashi syndrome underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation between the ages of 2 years 9 months and 7 years. The outcome was uneventful, with sustained mixed chimerism. No subsequent recurrent infections or hemophagocytic syndrome were observed. At the age of 22 to 24 years, these 3 patients developed a neurologic deficit combining difficulty walking, loss of ...
