The methods used at the Clinical Research Centre, Northwick Park Hospital, to treat wounds potentially infected with neurotropic viruses are outlined. Emphasis is laid on first aid and on surgical attention. Patients should remain under medical supervision for at least four weeks after the injury, the need for specific post-exposure treatment depending on the nature of the exposure.

A boy with X-linked agammaglobulinemia experienced progressive global motor decline, cerebellar syndrome, and epilepsy. All standard polymerase chain reactions for neurotropic viruses were negative on cerebrospinal fluid and brain biopsy. Next-generation sequencing allowed fast identification of a new astrovirus strain (HAstV-VA1/HMO-C-PA), which led to tailor the patient's treatment, with enco...

Cladophialophora bantiana is a neurotropic dematiaceous fungus which rarely causes disseminated disease. We report a case of proven C. bantiana osteomyelitis in a renal transplant recipient, complicated with probable cerebral disease. Stable disease was reached after combined antifungal therapies, immune enhancement and amputation of the infected lower limb.

Neurophysiology. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neurotropic factor essential for the survival and maintenance of NGF-dependent neurons. NGF-dependent neurons include NGF-dependent primary afferents and sympathetic postganglionic neurons in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). NGF-dependent neurons in the PNS form an interface between the nervous system and the body-proper (the organism minus th...

Parastrongylus (= Angiostrongylus) cantonensis is a parasitic nematode of Norway rats throughout tropical regions. This parasite is neurotropic and causes disease and death in humans and other mammals. We report the first identification of P. cantonensis as the cause of a debilitating neurologic disease in a captive primate in Florida.

Many major physiological changes occur within the rodent central nervous system (CNS) during the first few postnatal weeks. These include axonogenesis, synaptogenesis and myelination. Concomitant with CNS development over this period, there is a decrease in susceptibility to many neurotropic virus infections in that infection of suckling animals results in lethal encephalitis whereas infection ...
