Magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction (MAT-MI) is a recently introduced imaging modality for noninvasive electrical impedance imaging, with ultrasound imaging resolution and a contrast reflecting the electrical conductivity properties of tissues. However, previous MAT-MI systems can only image samples that are much more conductive than real human or animal tissues. To image real bi...

Traditional diagnostic methods used to detect American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis, such as histopathology using biopsy samples, culture techniques, and direct search for parasites, have low sensitivity and require invasive collection procedures. This study evaluates the efficiency of noninvasive sampling methods (swab) along with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for diagnosing American Tegumentar...

Collection of exhaled breath (EB) and exhaled breath condensate (EBC) is a noninvasive method for obtaining samples from the lower airways. While this technique has been well established for the diagnosis of lower respiratory tract diseases in human medicine, only a few studies have been performed in veterinary medicine. This article critically reviews the collection methods and parameter value...

Methods The prospective observational study included 139 patients with a clinical diagnosis of AECOPD and Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stages III-IV. NT-proBNP was determined from venous blood samples on patient admissions to the hospital with the use of a quantitative electrochemiluminescence assay on an Elecsys 2010 analyzer (Roche Diagnostics) according to es...

We evaluated measurements of oxygen saturation from four noninvasive pulse oximeters, and two conventional arterial oximeters. Simultaneous measurements were obtained on each instrument on three different occasions in five healthy subjects breathing gas with an FIO2 of 1.00, 0.50, 0.21, 0.17, 0.15, 0.13 and 0.11. Mean bias relative to the sum of oxy-, carboxy-, and methemoglobins ranged from -0...

Noninvasive monitoring of blood/tissue glucose concentrations has been successfully accomplished in individual diabetic subjects by using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometric methods. Three different spectrometer configurations were tested: a) a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer with an indium antimonide detector; b) a grating monochromator equipped with a silicon (Si...

The inevitable has happened: genomic technologies have been added to our noninvasive genetic sampling repertoire. In this issue of Molecular Ecology, Perry et al. (2010) demonstrate how DNA extraction from chimpanzee faeces, followed by a series of steps to enrich for target loci, can be coupled with next-generation sequencing. These authors collected sequence and single-nucleotide polymorphism...

BACKGROUND Tissue invasion or tissue infiltration are clinical behaviors of a poor-prognosis subset of meningiomas. We carried out proteomic analyses of tissue extracts to discover new markers to accurately distinguish between infiltrative and noninfiltrative meningiomas. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Protein lysates of 64 different tissue samples (including two brain-invasive and 32 infiltr...

A nested PCR assay to detect parasite DNA in slit aspirates from skin lesions of patients with post-kala-azar dermal lesihmaniasis (PKDL) is described. PCR results were positive in 27 of 29 (93%) samples by nested PCR assay, while only 20 of 29 (69%) were positive in a primary PCR assay. The nested PCR assay allowed reliable diagnosis of PKDL in a noninvasive manner.

We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated that picosecond time-resolved optical spectroscopy in the visible/near-infrared (NIR) region (700-1040 nm) is a useful technique for noninvasive characterization of wood. This technique has been demonstrated on both softwood and hardwood samples treated in different ways simulating the aging process suffered by waterlogged woods. In all the cases...
