We give exact and approximation algorithms for two-center problems when the input is a set D of disks in the plane. We first study the problem of finding two smallest congruent disks such that each disk in D intersects one of these two disks. Then we study the problem of covering the set D by two smallest congruent disks.

New families of exact general relativistic thick disks are constructed using the “displace, cut, fill and reflect” method. A class of functions used to “fill” the disks is derived imposing conditions on the first and second derivatives to generate physically acceptable disks. The analysis of the function’s curvature further restrict the ranges of the free parameters that allow phisically accept...

Newalkaloid antibiotics named kobutimycins A (1) and B (2) (Fig. 1) were isolated from the culture broth of a streptomycete strain No. TA3341, which was isolated from a soil sample collected at Kobutizawa, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. The strain has been classified as Streptomyces sp. TA3341. In this communication we wish to report the fermentation, isolation, structural elucidation and biologi...

We have imaged the enigmatic radio source-I (Orion–I) in the Orion-KL nebula with the VLA at 43 GHz with 34 mas angular resolution. The continuum emission is highly elongated and is consistent with that expected from a nearly edge-on disk. The high brightness and lack of strong molecular lines from Orion– I can be used to argue against emission from dust. Collisional ionization and H free-free ...

We present models of giant planet migration in evolving protoplanetary disks. Our disks evolve subject to viscous transport of angular momentum and photoevaporation, while planets undergo Type II migration. We use a Monte Carlo approach, running large numbers of models with a range in initial conditions. We find that relatively simple models can reproduce both the observed radial distribution o...

ABSTRACT We used the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), to compare three feeding bioassay techniques using flour disks. The area (scanner or digital photographs) and mass (sensitive balance) of the same flour disks were measured daily for 1 or 2 wk to assess feeding by insects. The loss in mass and area over 4 h was measured, as some variation over time wa...

We present ALMA continuum and spectral line data at 0.89 mm and 3.2 mm for three disks surrounding young brown dwarfs and very low mass stars in the Taurus star forming region. Dust thermal emission is detected and spatially resolved for all the three disks, while CO(J = 3 − 2) emission is seen in two disks. We analyze the continuum visibilities and constrain the disks physical structure in dus...

How are sites suitable for osteoclastogenesis determined? We addressed this issue using in vivo and in vitro experimental systems. We first examined the formation of osteoclasts in ectopic bone induced by BMP-2. When collagen disks which contained BMP-2 (BMP-2-disks) or vehicle (control-disks) were implanted into wild-type mice, osteoclasts and osteoblasts appeared in the BMP-2-disks, but not i...

The Massive Array of Idle Disks (MAID) technique is an effective energy saving schemes for parallel disk systems. The goal MAID is to skew I/O load towards a few disks so that other disks can be transitioned to low power states to conserve energy. I/O load skewing techniques like MAID inherently affect reliability of parallel disks because disks storing popular data tend to have high failure ra...
