An adaptation of cellulose acetate electrophoresis for studying concentrated cerebrospinal fluid is described. Two hundred and twenty-one patients have been studied, and the specificity for multiple sclerosis and sub-acute sclerosing panencephalitis is discussed. This has been positive for oligoclonal banding (OB) in 79% of patients with clinically definite multiple sclerosis.

A 22-year-old woman presented with photopsia, sensory loss, and paresthesia over both lower extremities, visual scotomas, and painless binocular vision loss over 5 months. MRI showed T2 hyperintensities near the optic chiasm (figure 1, B and C), floor of the fourth ventricle and the colliculi (figure 2, A–F), and central gray matter of the spinal cord (figure 1A). CSF analysis was notable for e...

In patients suspected of multiple sclerosis (MS), even in the case of MRI positive changes, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is of great practical value. Until now, however, only IgG index, restricted oligoclonal IgG bands and the examination of IgG subclasses have been of practical value. The determination of other immunological markers is too expensive to be introduced into laboratory diagn...

A 24 year old woman in the 33rd week of pregnancy developed progressive neurological complications with right sided hemiparesis in association with the occurrence of linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" (LSCS) and pre-existing plaque-morphea, already being treated by balneophototherapy. Further progression of neurological symptoms led to a caesarean section with the delivery of a healthy child...

We report two cases of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE) that differed in their clinical patterns, the underlying tumours, and the associated paraneoplastic antibodies. The first patient was a young adult male, with anti-MA-2 antibodies and testicular tumour. The clinical picture was restricted to limbic involvement. The second patient was a 56-year old, female heavy smoker; with seizure...

Saffold cardiovirus, a newly discovered human cardiovirus, has close similarity with Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) which can cause a chronic demyelinating encephalomyelitis in mice. In this study, we tested whether Saffold cardiovirus infection of the brain is associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). Autopsy white matter samples from 19 MS and 9 normal brain donors were tested...

AIM The aim of this study was to determine whether there were any differences in intrathecal synthesis of immunoglobulin G (IgG) (IgG index) and number of oligoclonal bands (OCB) among particular types of multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS 120 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were examined from 29 clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients and 91 MS patients (77 patients with relapsing-remitt...

OBJECTIVE To identify a biomarker distinguishing patients who, despite a primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) clinical course, may nonetheless benefit from immune therapy. METHODS The presence or absence of both immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM oligoclonal bands (OCB) was blindly examined in paired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples from a large PPMS patient cohort, and related...

UNLABELLED The "hygiene hypothesis" postulates an inverse relationship between the prevalence of parasitic infections and the frequency of multiple sclerosis (MS). OBJECTIVE It was to study whether antibodies against parasites could be demonstrated more frequently in blood serum from MS patients with oligoclonal bands (OCB) than from MS patients without OCB. METHODS We studied serum samples...

Cytokines and intrathecal IgG synthesis were determined in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and sera to evaluate inflammatory activity in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients during clinical remission. Although the disease was stable, there had been a significant increase of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNFalpha and IFNgamma in the CSF and serum, with no significant changes of IL12 and IL10 produ...
