Here, we present the draft genome of Bacillus velezensis 3A-25B, which totaled 4.01 Mb with 36 contigs, 3,948 genes, and a GC content of 46.34%. This strain, which demonstrates biocontrol activity against root rot causal phytopathogens in horticultural crops and friendly interactions in roots of pepper plantlets, was obtained from grassland soil in Zacatecas Province, Mexico.
Plants contain a sophisticated innate immune network to prevent pathogenic microbes from gaining access to nutrients and from colonizing internal structures. The first layer of inducible response is governed by the plant following the perception of microbe- or modified plant-derived molecules. As the perception of these molecules results in a plant response that can provide efficient resistance...
Sequences of selected marker loci have been widely used for the identification of specific pathogens and the development of sequence-based diagnostic methods. Although such approaches offer several advantages over traditional culture-based methods for pathogen diagnosis and identification, they have their own pitfalls. These include erroneous and incomplete data in reference databases, poor or ...
Phylogenetic relationships among 50 Phytophthora species and between Phytophthora and other oomycetes were examined on the basis of the ITS sequences of genomic rDNA. Phytophthora grouped with Pythium, Peronospora, and Halophytophthora, distant from genera in the Saprolegniales. Albugo was intermediate between these two groups. Unlike Pythium, Phytophthora was essentially monophyletic, all but ...
Mycology is changing as an era of extensive genome sequencing comes of age and provides vital information that enables questions to be addressed about fungi in all the major taxonomic groups. As technology transfer facilitates what was once only possible for a very small number of model species, it becomes possible to explore the biology and biodiversity of fungi as a whole. The availability of...
To determine the phylogenetic placement of the major groups of higher fungi, we sequenced the DNA sequences from the small-subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) coding regions from Taphrina wiesneri (synonym: T. cerasi) and Saitoella complicata and compared them to 18S rRNA sequences from the oomycetes, chytridiomycetes, zygomycetes, ascomycetes, and basidiomycetes. Here we demonstrate that the asco...
Oomycetes, or water moulds, are fungal-like organisms phylogenetically related to algae. They cause devastating diseases in both plants and animals. Here, we describe seven oomycete species that are emerging or re-emerging threats to agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture and natural ecosystems. They include the plant pathogens Phytophthora infestans, Phytophthora palmivora, Phytophthora ramoru...
