CLINICAL MATERIAL OF necessity, a very large sample of procedures needs to be gathered to give a significant amount of information, as complications from the use of tourniquets are rare. Because of their rarity and the concern of the surgeon on these occasions, it was thought that questionnaire information was likely to be quite accurate. One hundred and fifty-one members of the Australian Orth...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to examine the factors of postoperative paralysis in patients who have undergone thoracic ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) surgery. We report a patient with subacute thyroiditis complicated by vocal cord paralysis; the paralysis has persisted after recovery from thyroiditis.
Pakistan reported 1046 cases of paralytic poliomyelitis in 1992. In 1993, 78% of all children received three doses of Oral poliovaccine (OPV), but there were 1115 cases to the end of September. As it is not feasible to make house to house surveys to check, we do not know how many children with polio fall outside the reports from surveillance centers which are mainly large hospitals. Hospitals h...
Idiopathic unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis is a rare condition that typically causes minimal symptoms, especially during exercise. Several reports indicated progressive improvement or even complete recovery to normal function of diaphragmatic paralysis that complicated various thoracic and extrathoracic conditions. In this case we describe a 57-year-old male with spontaneous recovery of idio...
We report the case of an eight-month-old girl who presented with a poliomyelitis-like paralysis in her left upper limb caused by enterovirus 71 infection. She recovered useful function after nerve transfers performed six months after the onset of paralysis. Early neurotisation can be used successfully in the treatment of poliomyelitis-like paralysis in children.
Diaphragmatic paralysis after cardiac surgery is an important complication especially in infants. We report a child who developed diaphragmatic paralysis, atelectasis, bronchomalasia and respiratory failure following cardiac surgery. Ventilatory support alleviated respiratory distress in this child. This report illustrates the usefulness of invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support for a pe...
SUMMARY Left vocal cord paralysis in association with patent ductus arteriosus is unusual. We report a patient with long-standing patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in whom CT studies obtained before and after paralysis developed showed an interval increase in size of the pulmonary trunk. The pathogenesis of left vocal cord paralysis in association with long-standing PDA is discussed.
Facial paralysis can have devastating physical and psychosocial consequences. These are particularly severe in children in whom loss of emotional expressiveness can impair social development and integration. The etiologies of facial paralysis, prospects for spontaneous recovery, and functions requiring restoration differ in children as compared with adults. Here we review contemporary managemen...
Limb paralysis can develop for various reasons. We found a 13-year-old patient who became paralyzed in her lower extremities after laparoscopic appendectomy. Some tests, including electrodiagnostic studies and magnetic resonance imaging, were performed to evaluate the cause of lower limb paralysis. None of the tests yielded definite abnormal findings. We subsequently decided to explore the poss...
