PURPOSE To evaluate the histological features in lungs, peritoneum and liver of rats subjected to fecal peritonitis and treated with peritoneal lavage with 0.2% ropivacaine. METHODS Twenty Wistar rats were subjected to laparotomy 6 h after the fecal peritonitis induction with autogenous stool. Rats were randomly distributed into 4 groups: I - (n=5) Control, no treatment; II - (n=5) Drying of ...

The aim of this study was to specifically visualize micrometastases in the peritoneal cavity, which cannot be detected by conventional methods, by using enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein (EGFP) containing carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) promoter in an upstream position. In in vitro experiments, two cell lines from human gastric cancer, MKN45 and MKN1, and a cell line from human fibrosarcoma, HT...

1. Inflammation retards the absorption of horse serum globulin and crystalline egg albumin from the peritoneal cavity and subcutaneous tissue, but retardation of the absorption of crystalline egg albumin is less than that of globulin, which is less diffusible. 2. Inflammation retards the absorption of the specific polysaccharide of pneumococcus Type I from the peritoneal cavity; inflammation ma...

Background Extraovarian Primary Peritoneal Carcinoma (EOPPC) was first described by Swerdlow in 1959 [1]. Basically, EOPPC is a malignancy that spreads widely inside the peritoneal cavity involving mostly the omentum with minimal or no ovarian involvement. Most of the EOPPC cases reported have been of serous histology; histopathological, immunohistochemical, and clinical similarities have been ...

The local action of bile salts has been associated with a wide variety of gastrointestinal diseases. This paper describes an animal model to determine which of the major solid components of bile are responsible for peritoneal destruction in biliary peritonitis. In the rat, bile salts within the peritoneal cavity cause peritonitis but cholesterol and lecithin are without deleterious effect.

A 61-year-old male on anticoagulant therapy underwent an endoscopic multiple colon polypectomy in our Department according to established procedures. Several days later he developed an intramural colonic hematoma, which burst into the peritoneal cavity leading to fatal intra-peritoneal hemorrhage. Herein we present the case and discuss the causative role of the anticoagulant therapy but also of...

This study was undertaken to investigate the requirement of β2-integrins (CD11/CD18) for extravasation of neutrophils in mice. After intraperitoneal thioglycollate injection, an in vivo model of inflammation, leukocyte extravasation into the peritoneal cavity was studied in CD18-deficient and wild-type control mice. Before the induction of peritonitis, total and differential leukocyte counts in...

Subtilase cytotoxin (SubAB) is the prototype of a new family of AB(5) cytotoxins produced by Shiga-toxigenic Escherichia coli. Its cytotoxicity is due to its capacity to enter cells and specifically cleave the essential endoplasmic reticulum chaperone BiP. Previous studies have shown that intraperitoneal injection of mice with purified SubAB causes a pathology that overlaps with that seen in hu...
