Any viable theory of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) as modified gravity is likely to require fields in addition to the usual tensor field of General Relativity. For such theories the MOND phenomenology emerges as an effective fifth force probably associated with a scalar field. Here I consider the constraints imposed upon such theories by solar system phenomenology, primarily by the absence...

A phenomenological model for the dissipation of scalar fluctuations due to the straining by the fluid motion is proposed in this Brief Communication. An explicit equation is obtained for the time evolution of the probability distribution function of a coarse-grained scalar concentration. The model relies on a self-convolution process. We first present this model in the Batchelor regime and then...

Freedom Penultimate draft. Please cite only final version in The Routledge Companion to Phenomenology. Human freedom was Jean-Paul Sartre's central philosophical preoccupation throughout his career. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the cornerstone of his moral and political thought, Being and Nothingness, contains an extensive and subtle account of the metaphysical freedom that he consi...

We discuss the possibility of a smooth transition from the pre-to the post-big bang regime, in the context of the lowest-order string eeective action (without higher-derivative corrections), taking into account with a phenomenological model of source the repulsive gravitational eeects due to the back-reaction of the quantum uctuations outside the horizon. We determine a set of necessary conditi...

The glassy wormlike chain model is a highly successful phenomenological model recently introduced to describe anomalously slow subdiffusive dynamics in biopolymer networks and living cells. Here we extend this model by proposing a generic scheme how to include nonlinear plastic effects by introducing the possibility of force-dependent opening and closing of internal bonds. Further, we discuss p...

Anisotropic line-shape broadening (peak width which is not a smooth function of d-spacing) is frequently observed in powder diffraction patterns, and can be a source of considerable dif®culty for whole-pattern ®tting or Rietveld analysis. A model of the multi-dimensional distribution of lattice metrics within a powder sample is developed, leading naturally to a few parameters which can be varie...

The ratio of intercept to slope of the Pomeron trajectory is derived in a phenomenological model based on a QCD approach to diffraction.

We present a phenomenological model for the generation of human visual scanpaths. Successions of saccadic eye-movements are treated as realizations of a stochastic jump process in a random quenched salience eld. EEciency of the process is deened in terms of convergence properties of the time dependent probability of xating a region in the visual environment. Based on the assumption that the vis...

Nonlinear properties of the order parameter modulation wave in such systems as thiourea are described in the framework of the phenomenological model with no Lifshitz invariant. It is also shown that for some values of the thermodynamic potential parameters the lock-in transition is continuous in the type II systems. Close to this transition the soliton lattice appears.
