The Hyperuniverse Program is a new approach to set-theoretic truth due to Sy D. Friedman, leading to the resolution of many questions independent from ZFC. In this talk I will introduce this program by briefly illustrating its mathematical content, and by discussing its philosophical assumptions and implications.
In this paper I frame my past design research with the philosophical approaches of participatory design as outlined by Pelle Ehn in Work-Oriented Design of Computer Artifacts. The paper provides a series of related design techniques as exploration of interaction design methods and concludes by raising questions of methodologies research and evaluation. Author
In his published work and even more in conversations, Tarski emphasized what he thought were important philosophical aspects of his work. The English translation of his more philosophical papers [56m] was dedicated to his teacher Tadeusz Kotarbinski, and in informal discussions of philosophy he often referred to the influence of Kotarbinski. Also, the influence of Leiniewski, his dissertation ...
We reconsider the Nagelian theory of reduction and argue that, contrary to a widely held view, it is the right analysis of intertheoretic reduction. The alleged difficulties of the theory either vanish upon closer inspection or turn out to be substantive philosophical questions rather than knock-down arguments.
Philosophers of science have found the literature surrounding Maxwell’s demon deeply problematic. This paper explains why, summarizing various philosophical complaints and adding to them. The first part of the paper critically evaluates attempts to exorcise Maxwell’s demon; the second part raises foundational questions about some of the putative demons that are being summoned.
The philosophy of information systems must explain what the field is about, what constituents make up the field, how we advance knowledge about those constituents, and what traditional philosophical issues may arise through the study, use and advance of information systems. This paper attempts to lay out the unique elements of the field, identify some key questions, and attempt a few very preli...
In spite of millennia of introspection, research and debate, there is still no compelling evidence for any single model of consciousness (Dehaene & Changeux 2011). Nor is there agreement on how to define consciousness, what constitutes a rigorous model of consciousness, and what research methods are most appropriate or productive when investigating consciousness. Current science relies on biolo...
During the past two decades, research on the role of biologic factors in antisocial behavior has made great progress. This article discusses recent findings and their possible implications for future forensic assessment and treatment. In addition, some relevant philosophical, ethical, and political questions are brought forward.
The UK's first taught master's degree in medical humanities involves a field of inquiry that is frequently philosophical, pursuing interests and questions traditionally arising in medical philosophy and ethics, but on a larger interdisciplinary canvas, drawing upon literature and the visual arts, sociology and anthropology, social history and politics, and theological and religious perspectives.
The four case studies on chance in evolution provide a rich source for further philosophical analysis. Among the issues raised are the following: Are there different conceptions of chance at work, or is there a common underlying conception? How can a given concept of chance be distinguished from other chance concepts and from nonchance concepts? How can the occurrence of a given chance process ...
